A Black Imperial IPA.

Pours brown with a lasting head. Nose shows complex roasted malt with chocolate, cocoa, roasted coffee and oatmeal notes along with very soft spicy and resinous hops. Lovely. The complex roasted malt follows as a flavour with more coffee. Some booze follows, lending a coffee liqueur character. Not all that much hops but there’s some definite resinous and piny notes. Well-balanced bitterness in the finish. Nice soft carbonation, but it could be upped a little.

Draft @ ZBF 2012 // black with a creamy tanned head // smell is heavy of roasted & touch burned malts (lots of them), grounded coffee, no hops in the nose // taste is heavy on roasted malts, coffee, 95 % chocolate, smidgeon of liquorish, slightly bitter in the back (hops but little & none of the pine & citrus kind to be found) // medium bodied // more like a very roasted porter especially given the lack of typical pine & citrus hops etc. // regardless of those technicalities // this is a great beer

UPDATED: FEB 28, 2013 Really dark brown colour. Sweet, roasted malty aroma. Really silky texture. Has an intense flavour of roasted, bitter malts but it remains quite fresh tasting due to the hoppiness. Nice lingering bitter finish.

750 ml bottle into signature tulip glass, best before 9/6/2015. Pours lightly hazy deep reddish brown color with a nice 2-3 finger dense and fluffy light khaki head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that last. Nice dense soapy lacing clings around the glass, with some moderate streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of orange, grapefruit, lemon zest, roasted malt, coffee, cocoa, light char, pine, floral, toast, grass, and floral earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of roasted malt and hop notes; with good strength. Taste of big grapefruit, orange zest, lemon zest, roasted malt, coffee, cocoa, light char, toast, floral, pine, grass, and floral earthiness. Fair amount of pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of citrus, citrus zest, roasted malt, coffee, cocoa, toast, light char, floral, pine, grass, and floral earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Great complexity of hop and malt flavors; with a fantastic balance of roasted malt/hop flavors with balanced bitterness; and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium-full body; with a fairly creamy, slick, crisp, and moderately sticky mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic imperial black IPA! Awesome balance and complexity of hop and roasted malt flavors; and very smooth to sip on. An extremely delicious offering.

Bottle. Pours dark brown with a large tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, earthy notes, chocolate, citrus, bit of alcohol. Taste: coffee, roasted malts, hops, hints of tropical fruit, light sparkling carbonation that quickly disappears in the mouth and smoothens. Fairly bitter with a long lingering warming coffee/cocao/citrus finish. Love it!

UPDATED: DEC 14, 2013 Murky brown body with big, stable and bubbly tan head. Nice balance between a Belgian style yeast, sweet caramel malts and fresh, modern hops. Humous, pumpkin cake, bit floral. Very nice. Fresh but also alcoholic taste. Maybe more watery than expected. Sharp end and lots of residual sugars. Still definitely enough hops as well. Quite a powerful and modern beer, but not refined. (75cl bottle) Re-rate. Black appearance, quite clean. Very well balanced yet strong coffee and hop mix, modern. Makes me want to dive in. Cake, roasted and butty malts yet not sweet, providing a balance to a proper amount if hop bitterness. Not over the top but very drinkable and every sip is taste again. Layered taste, powerful and still a great cleanliness. Long ending. Delicious. Either I changed, the situation or this beer, buy I loved it this time (old rating 3.3). (Bottle at Berthom Tours)
