argo0 (6144), Washington DC, USA Dec 27, 2007 (12oz bottle) Small tan head atop clear cola-black body. Aroma is medium sweet, caramel, chocolate, some smoke/roast. Taste is medium sweet, smoke/roast, some bittersweet chocolate. Watery light-medium body with light oaty creaminess. CaptainCougar (4624), Rockville, Maryland, USA Aug 18, 2003 Pours a thin dark black with a thick lightly lacing tan head. Rich milk chocolate oatmeal aroma with coffee undertones. Body starts thin and dull with a light mix of sweet and sour but has a pleasant long lasting chocolatey grainy finish. A novel idea for a beer, but it could've been done better. muzzlehatch (4425), Burlington, Vermont, USA Nov 4, 2001 Updated: Jan 4, 2004Nov 2001: Lovely burnt coffe/chocolate aroma; nice-looking brew; flavor disappoints, though -- a bit thin, lacking in the strong flavors you'd expect from the handsome aroma -- very average down the throat. Still, probably this brewer's best -- other VT beermakers are far better.
Jan 2004: Black. Head initially thick and creamy looking, but fades quickly. Very nice aroma, much as before. Creamy mouthfeel is nice, but not a lot of flavor to go with it. Very slight downgrade over 2001 rating; the only one of TR's bottled offerings even remotely worth drinking. MartinT (4307), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Jul 7, 2002 Roasted malt and chocolate smoke…The skeleton of a stout… tiggmtl (4169), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Jul 18, 2004 Chocolate, lightly toasty aroma. Dark brown with tan head that recedes to thin cover. Not quite dark enough or thick enough to my mind. Sweet and malty with pleasant finishing roastiness. Body is light and mouthfeel fairly dry. On tap at the Vermont Brewers Festival.
