An ultra-premium all-malt Strong Ale at 6% alc./vol. Attractive copper colour with a complex aroma that is assertive and alive with balanced sweet malt nuances and fruity/floral ale and hop aromatics. A rich, slightly sweet caramel malt flavour is enhanced by the taste of fresh hops and classic ale fruitiness. Hop bitterness is moderate to full, but well balanced by the malt elements. Perfect food pairings include but are not limited to onion soups, beef and pork ribs, lamb dishes, hearty stews, bruschetta, carrot cake, and cheddar and pecorino cheeses.

Bottle - Light fruit esters and caramel malts. Clear gold with a thin white head. Light malts and grains, but really not much else.

341 ml bottle from brewery. clear copper colour, minimal head on an easy pour. Smells malty, caramel, sweet. Taste has some fruity flavours to it, plus candied sugar, sweet bread, caramel with a bit of booze on the finish. Decent ale.

341ml bottle. Pours a crystal clear golden copper with a one finger, off-white head that thins out. Aroma is faint with notes of caramel and bread mixed with a slight fruitiness. Taste is a balanced bitter with a touch of bready caramel with a slight fruity finish and aftertaste. Medium body and carbonation. Fairly clean and refreshing in the mouth with a slightly fuller feel than the other True North beers I’ve tried. Overall not bad. A bit more flavourful than the other True North brews I’ve already tried but still a but underdone. The aroma could be more enticing and the taste more complex. Not offensive but a bit simple. Cheers!

Not quite what I envision a strong ale is. Pours reddish clear with ok head and lacing. Mostly caramelized, sweet malt in aroma with a little woodenness and some booze. Finishes sweet and boozy. Bottle from their store.

Amber golden pour. The aroma is light nutty and toasty. Some sweet malt and a bit of toffee. Assertive hopping but not a lot of hop aroma or flavour. A little bit of woodiness and some fruit as well. Some fusely yeast character and a bit of an odd underattenuated malt flavour. Sort of chewy and almost cloying with a bit of some lingering dusty yeast notes. Pretty poor.

Originally rated May 2004. A copper-red colour with a beige bubbly head. I don’t know if it’s a bad batch, but I see hardly any carbonation. It has a sweet smell going on the bitter side. I know it is blasphemy, but this beer is actually much better drank from the bottle.

A hazed amber ale with a thin white head. In aroma, a nice caramel malt with nice British hops, light treacle, some vinous and burned caramel notes. In mouth, a smooth caramel malt with light British hops, some nice effect from maderization, a bit thin in finale (bottle is about a year old).

Too exhausted to put much into words. This beer is thirst-quenching with a creamy and smooth feel. The hops are alive just enough to keep things interesting as they poke through a caramel and vanilla backbone. Surprisingly tasty and easier to chug than water. Wasn’t expecting something this good.

341 ml bottle in 12-pack from TBS, served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass.

App.: Clear deep amber with a fair off-white froth. Aroma: Rich caramel, toffee, treacle, tons of lovely malt, some light nuttiness, a touch earthy, brown sugar, burnt sugar, biscuits, a touch of hops? Palate: Medium+ body, fairly full but smooth effervescence. Flav.: Much like the nose with plenty of rich, delicious, chewy malts and a restrained hit of pine/resin hops; dry with a little bitterness and a reasonably nice malt finish.

The name conjures up horrid macro-malt liquors and belies the true, and pleasant, nature of this brew. I’m happy with Magnotta’s products.
