2.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
UPDATED: JUL 22, 2005 After reading a lot about the Sigl breweries history, I thought this may be a decent ’in your face’ German-style Pilsener that was up there with the big guns. Listed in Oz as a beer of the Summer and fully imported from Salzburg, Austria, I decided to give it a test drive! Poured a pale straw, with a diminishing white lace. Aroma of grains with a spicy floral and sour hop note, disappeared quicker than the head. Light body, dry, with a husky aftertaste. Nothing outstanding, and rather bland. Reasonably clean, grassy with low malt and citric flavours. Undemanding light refresher.

2.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20
It smelled good, it looked good, it hit my tongue and my tongue had a faint memory of the early untainted days of my German beer drinking. Then it hit the back of my tongue.....who took my memory away. Something (the malt?) was all wrong. The beer was fresh, brewed 5 minutes from where I live, but what happened. This was brewed in Berkeley.....

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Note: This version was brewed in Berkeley CA and not Salzburg Austria. Fizzy yellow gold color. Medium sized white foamy head. Aroma is malty, grainy and grassy. A lighter bodied pilsner. Malts are fruity, sweet and grassy. Mild yet crisp hops. Light and refreshing. Nice balance. Good light crisp pilsner. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

2 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20
UPDATED: OCT 21, 2010 Hoppy, vegetal, spicy and moderately skunky aroma (green bottle). Light golden yellow color, clear, generating a slight head. Flavor is primarily spicy, dry and hoppy from the start to about midpoint, some crackery malt here as well, but as it warms it gains a slightly off, sweetish note towards the finish that distracts. Some late bitterness. Thin, fizzy texture, body is exceedingly light. The colder the better for this one, it seems.

1.3 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 4/20
Pale yellow with a thin head. Skunky nose. Light and watery mouthfeel. Rather carbonated, especially up front. Metallic off-flavor was unappealing. Sticky sweetness was mild, but it lingered and became annoying. Notes of cooked corn. Some grassy notes as well. Couldn't really finish this one.

1.6 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 6/20
Head is initially small, frothy, white, mostly diminishing. Body is clear light yellow. Aroma is lightly malty (grain), lightly hoppy (herbs, flowers), with a note of DMS. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, moderately bitter, slightly unclean, slightly husky. Light to medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Pretty high level of DMS in the nose and an unclean/husky finish makes this one a nice little drain pour. Bought out of a dark six-pack in the back of the store, as I always do in cases like this, to avoid skunk...but in some ways a skunked bottle may have improved things.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Light straw color with a bright white tall head and light lacing. Light noble hops and hint of pale sweet malt. Light malt sweet start, evaporates quickly. Dry hops and pale malt middle. Rather bitter and slightly acidic in the finish. A mid-level pils. Definitely sharp and crisp, perhaps a touch too much so.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
I had this beer at The Griffon Pub in Charleston, SC. I liked the tall slim glasses they served the beer in. I also met the U. S. distributor’s represntative who says they are building abrewery in the L.A. area. I thought the beer was a little better than Pilsner Urquel.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Appearance is a straw color with limited carbonation, a frothy white head that diminishes quickly, and leaves a light film and a bubbly sticky lace. Initial aroma is crisp and grassy. Gradually a malt presence is obvious with a background of hops. Palate is light, filmy and slightly creamy with low effervescence and a light bite at the finish. The flavor has a fair balance of hops and sweetness.
Lighter, sweeter and less crisp than many pilsners. Uncomplicated.
