(330 ml can - 冰纯 - bing chun) Light lager nose - quite plain smelling but also nothing bad about the nose. A touch of yeast or sweetness. Medium yellow pour with a moderate amount of foam that quickly dissipates (leftover foam film ... some oily/clinginess). Fair amount of rising bubbles. Quite light in flavor, light body. But with some bitterness follow thru. touch of licorice, sweetness. Nice on the palate, but other than some residual bitterness, I quickly forget I actually drank some. Typical light lager. Nothing bad about it, but nothing good either. Might be comparable to (slightly better than) Bud but would have to do a side by side taste.

Can, 330 ml, purchased during my trip to China with Louise in May 2014, savoured on September 17 2014; eye: golden, clear, no effervescence, tiny ring of off-white head, no lacing; nose: corn, caramel, water; mouth: corn, caramel, water, sugar, finale in corn with presence of caramel, light body, average carbonation, mildly sweet, watery; overall: quite ordinary but good because it brings back memory FRANÇAIS Canette, 330 ml, achetée lors de mon voyage en Chine avec Louise en mai 2014, savourée le 17 septembre 2014; œil : dorée, limpide, pas d’effervescence, minuscule anneau de mousse blanc cassé, pas de dentelle; nez : maïs, caramel, eau; bouche : maïs, caramel, eau, sucre, finale en maïs avec présence de caramel, corps léger, carbonatation moyenne, moyennement sucrée, aqueuse; en résumé : ordinaire mais bonne parce que c’est un souvenir de voyage

500ml can at Changchun Normal University. Pours pale yellow with a disappearing white head. Some cardboard aroma. Sweetness in the taste and finish. A little watery.

Can. Pours very light yellow, with a tiny head. Not much aroma on this one, apart from some straw and cardboard. Medium body with average carbonation. Flavour is very lightly hoppy acidic, with some sweet grass in the back. Easily forgettable.

Got this from a street shop in Guilin. Idrank it on the balcony of our hotel room overlooking a part of the river. Cold it tastes like water with carbonation and a slightly oxidized aftertaste. Warmer there is some Pilsener malt. No hops. Not good, not even for Chineese mass beer standards.

600 ml green bottle ordered reluctantly while having spicy food at a Szechuan restaurant in Yuen Long. Piss-like pale yellow colour; Thin head and white foam which fades in 20 seconds; Minimal lacing and barely notable carbonation; Smell of weak malt, wet cardboard and nothing else; Taste of wet cardboard, rice grains, faint chalk dust, extremely weak malt, and barely noticeable trace of hops; Feather light body, watery palate; Taste is dominated by wet cardboard throughout with faint chalk dust, malt taste is almost zero. Hoppiness is very faint, almost unnoticeable and has no finish. Slighty dry after taste, very easy to mouth.

Comments: the restaurant has only three choices for me to cut down the dryness and spiciness of the dishes - the local San Miguel, Blue Girl, and Tsingtao - I had all three before so I chose the least offensive one based on my memory, and I must say memory is never reliable! This watery swill is all wet cardboard front center and back. Not only it doesn’t quench my thirst, the chili I had actually amplifies its cardboard and chalk taste, which is so bad that I have to shovel down more chili to quell that. Its back label states “Good Beer with malty aroma”. Talk about a job well done, I mean the chili, not this crap. Any redeeming value? At least there is no skunk.

The most expensive half pint of beer I had whilst in China. Charged 36RMD at my hotel so it was one and one only!
Medium gold, well charged with a big head of foam that was messy and mostly lasting (first truly clean glass I had had since being in China I suppose!). Malty sweet, relatively clean nose with a spicy hop note coming through. Similar on the palate. Grainy, sweet toasted malt and mild corn notes upfront melding with a sour malt and hop backend and grassy, peppery and subtly bitter finish. Gassy, heavy in the stomach with medium-light body. There is an alkaline feel to it that develops as it warms, so down it went quickly. Light citrus comes out of the sourness. Not a bad quaffer. At least it has some back bone. (29,5cL, BB 30/11/12, The Qube Hotel, Pudong, Shanghai, China)
