UPDATED: NOV 14, 2011 I am pleased to be showing myself in a distinctive and remarkable way as I am irresistible and perceptive. My nightclub is a pub in Chinatown and this beer is courtesy of the New Yen Yen (I guess it should be the New Yuan Yuan really, of course the New Renminbi Renminbi would be just silly) supermarket where I purchased this for a keen price of $3.50. After finishing a Tiger schooner from the very aptly named pub for this area, The Mountbatten, I am now discreetly demonstrating my perspispacity by supping on this outside while watching Asia pass me by in my own back yard. What a shop I have just completed! I have roast dukk, chook feat and bean Kurd sheets. All this amid acid! Funny, can’t taste the ratter, sorry latter, but I am enjoying a well presented glass of this with a fine lace and consistent head. Perfect crema atop an opaque deep black beer. The nose is chocolate malt and vanilla with such clean notes to show the quality control in the brewing process. These are not as prominent in the taste but the clarity of flavour and mouthfeel is impressive. ABV sneaks up on you as the glass warms but all you are ever left with is the pleasant burnt malt palate of a well produced stout. Good stuff old China.

(Based on notes from 02092014) 330ml bottle from a take-out sushi-joint in st. Petersburg, which amazingly enough also had take-out Chinese beer, 6.7% abv. Black colour, average frothy mostly diminishing light brown head, good lacing. Heavily malty roasted aroma of dark bread and mild coffee, moderate piney hops. Taste is initially bittersweet turning into a moderately bitter and slightly salty finish with a light alcoholic feel. Medium to full body, oily texture, lively carbonation. Bit too little aroma for something that’s closer to porter, but certainly the best Asian beer I’ve had ever as all the rest have been bog-standard lagers.

Pours black pretty much with a tan head that fills at least 30% of the glass. Smell is a little sharp and somewhat sweet. Taste is kind of medicinal, little cocoa, little sweet but somehow decent. Dry finish. Pretty ok.

Bought this in Shanghai and the back label says 12°P and 4.5% ABV, yet says stout in English on the front. Pours a dark brown. Light aroma of roasted malts. Has a slight, burnt bitter taste. Best Tsingtao beer, but still watery when compared to other stouts.

Bottle. Miles ahead of other Tsingtaos. Rich, liquoricey nose with dark chocolate, roasted malts, plums. Lightish body for a stout, but not too fizzy. Rather sweet, with chocolate and coffee flavours prominent. Not too shabby.

Can: Aroma is malty and quite sweet, mainly sugary, with roasted malt and burnt cacao. Black color, coffee brown creamy head. Flavor is sweet and malty, sugary, notes of molasse and candy. Burnt malt, cacao powder, cooking chocolate, roastiness. Dry, cacao bitter end. This has been the best beer from china yet.

Appearance: Very dark brown, lots of tan head. Aroma: Dark malt, roasted. Slight coffee. Taste: More dark malt and coffee, warming. Slight alcohol. Nice surprise. Info: 355ml bottle, 13/6-2013, BB: 3/6-2014

355ml bottle poured into a tumbler glass. Clear dark brown with a small dark beige head. Soft roasty aromas, with some chocolate and faint earthy hops. Flavors of carob, sweet chocolate and mild coffee, with low bitterness and some roastiness. Some root vegetables after taste. Medium body with some cloying sweetness, not balanced, and quite hard to drink.

330 ml pull-tap can bought at Wellcome Superstore in Sheung Shui.

Clear deep blackish brown colour; Half finger head and beige foam which last for 2 minutes; Minimal lacing and notable carbonation; Sweet aroma of light roasted malt, coffee, caramel, light chocolate, rice, and hint of grass; Pretty strong sweet taste of dark roast malt, with corn syrup, coffee, rice grains, light milk chocolate, liquorices, nuts, alcohol, hint of citrus and light grass; Med to light body, Thin and slightly creamy palate; Taste profile is an unbalanced mix of thin dark malt, sugar syrup, and strong booze. The syrupy taste overwhelms the already thin malt roastiness and nuttiness. Adding the strong booze on top, and the overall taste is really going nowhere. Bad! Hoppiness is near zero nose, slight citrus in taste, and a slight grassy bitterness so ineffective that the finish is all sweet booze; Slightly dry after taste, sweet and boozy to mouth.

Comments: This one starts out badly with sweet nose, and then its full of syrupy grainy boozy taste, with a roast malt body so thin and hoppiness so light, all the ingredients simply don’t add up, they just sitting here, laughing at me why buying this? A swill which gives foreign stout a bad name. Avoid.
