There’s a pile of clichés we won’t deploy here attesting to the fact that you can never take anything in this world for granted. Sure enough, just as Tuatara’s beloved American Pale Ale looked like getting bigger than Texas, our supply of the mighty American hops that defined it started to go wobbly on us. Undeterred, we set to crafting a local solution. Aotearoa Pale Ale takes the spirit of the old APA and reanimates it with a hopping regime that’s as kiwi as a 25 year mortgage. The same-but-different local recipe (Pacific Jade, Cascade, Sauvin and Wai-iti for all you trainspotters) is well within the remit of the original APA, but with a deep, long, new age flavour profile.

UPDATED: MAY 18, 2015 Citrus grapefruit pale. Way too much tang here for me. Nice resinous quality but needs more tropical fruits.

On keg at the Bow Bar. Appearance - cloudy golden orange with a pleasant thin head. Nose - slight struck match and chicken skin thing going on. Taste - intense lemon and lime. Palate - close to medium bodied with a tangy texture and a long dry tangy finish. Overall - i have to say, this might be the least exciting beer of today. Needed more on the nose and taste didn’t really step up either.

Really enjoyed this, particularly when priced the same as lawnmower beer. Aroma was medium hop, more grass and spruce than floral. Taste was strong bread with caramel and nuts.

On tap at Pure Bar & Kitchen, Birmingham. Pours Clear golden with a single finger creamy coloured head. Aroma of hoppiness, a little skunky, light malts, orange, spice. Initial taste of light malts, then some orange, mixing with light spices, touch of some floralness too. Nice and smooth. Great!

Bright clear gold beer, decent pale cream colour head. Palate is light and crispy. Smooth sweetish pale malts, light cream. Hops are mildly skunky with mellow orange and orange marmalade. Very mild hop spice. Smooth semi dry finish. Mild floralness. Nicely joined up, clean and drinkable.

A very tasty pale ale, interesting hops in both the aroma and taste. The bottle is fantastic, with a lizard skin effect on the neck .

Bottle from Cornelius. Clear golden body with a thin white head. Low carbonation. Light lacing. Aroma of grain, grass and orange. Flavour of biscuit, boiled vegetables and a hint of citrus. Medium body with an oily mouthfeel. Soft fizz. Much simpler than I expected.
