There’s a pile of clichés we won’t deploy here attesting to the fact that you can never take anything in this world for granted. Sure enough, just as Tuatara’s beloved American Pale Ale looked like getting bigger than Texas, our supply of the mighty American hops that defined it started to go wobbly on us. Undeterred, we set to crafting a local solution. Aotearoa Pale Ale takes the spirit of the old APA and reanimates it with a hopping regime that’s as kiwi as a 25 year mortgage. The same-but-different local recipe (Pacific Jade, Cascade, Sauvin and Wai-iti for all you trainspotters) is well within the remit of the original APA, but with a deep, long, new age flavour profile.

(On tap) Clear pale amber with slight white head. Aroma has citrusy hops with some caramel. Medium body, excellent carbonation - soft and mouthfilling. Taste starts with gentle spice and tang with nice caramel notes developing and then giving way to a long bitter finish. An excellent beer.

Tuatara APA (Aotearoa PA) 5.8% in a 330 ml brown reptilian bottle purchased and consumed in Wellington, NZ. BB date of August 2014. Pours deep amber with a bubbly bone-colored head. Excellent lacing. A big pale ale featuring NZ hops, with a very aromatic herbal/weedy aroma and a citrus-herbal flavor. Long lasting hoppy aftertaste. Appropriate malts for balance. Feel: medium body; smooth; good carbonation.

Aroma and appearance very similar to The Tuatara APA (American version). Moderate malty notes, hops are present and alcohol is offset with sweetness. More bitter, less balance than the American version. Still a nice beer though.

UPDATED: JUL 19, 2014 Aroma is sweet, caramel, grapefruit. Taste is like a hoppier dead guy. Maltier than the other APA, and less hoppy. Big smooth palate. A malty, less-citrus-y, hoppy taste. Very good beer.

The head is robust, the body dark golden. It smells fruity-aromatic, hoppy, bit bitter and malty. The taste is fruity-creamy, aromatic, hoppy, bit bitter, just a bit alcoholic, malty, bit flowery. Very nice!

Draft. Rich amber with faint haziness and a rocky head (something rare to find in NZ). Fruit gum and candy apple and sweet caramel malt flavor, similar aroma but faint. Medium body, bit starchy and rough texture, carbonation also a tad fizzy and brash. Malt seems over-killed and burnt and the huskiness is off-putting. Growing notes of laundry soap as it opens... Medium to high bitterness with strong sweetness. Harsh hop acid prick the mouth and linger in the finish with a mish-mash of fruit cocktail, resin and gum. It’s hoppy, sweet and bitter and seems aimless and carelessly put together. Very basic.

In short: A well balanced smooth golden pale ale with a fun fruity/floral hop character. Good session beer.
How: Bottle 500ml, consumed a few days after purchase, however fresh a New-Zealand IPA can be in a Vermont store.
The look: Clear golden body topped by a medium white head with medium retention.
In long: The medium-aromatic hoppy nose is part fruity (mostly tropical) and part floral. In mouth the body feels full yet very light, like a mouthful of airy foam. Discreet semi-toasted cereals, a certain fruity sweetness just like dried fruits, an overall fluffy cotton candy sensation, a bitterness in the soft-medium range that is just enough to balance out the malt sweetness. The hops flavors are kind of fun, blending blood oranges, mangos, papayas, grapefruits, kiwis, and other exotic fruits, all that over a bed of flowers. A decent beer but it lacked punch, I wish I could drink a fresh pint of this on the side of the planet, it might be kick-ass when very fresh. You guys should know that my doctor forced me to stop drinking beer and after only one week and my cholesterol was down 2 points, my energy level was up 20%, my BMI was down 3 points, my heart rate was up two beats per minute and my will to live was down to zero.

500ml bottle. Deep golden body with loose white head that settles to a stable collar and decent lace. Nose and taste is hoppy (resin, floral, citrus, grapefruit, orange) with a toasty malt bill and a substantial dry bitterness that lingers. Medium body and carbonation with oily texture. A little too hoppy and unbalanced to get top marks from me.

500ml bottle, blonde-orange color, with a thick pillowy white head, light pale, toasted, caramel malt nose, with a mild earthy floral citrus, leafy, grassy hop, toffee accent, and a faint fruit salad note in the aroma follows through on a medium-bodied palate with a nice earthy pale, toasted, caramel malty, flowery leafy, grassy, citrus hoppy character, with some mild lemon, grapefruit peel, lemon pie crust flavours, with a toffeeish undertone, leading towards a mild toasted, caramel maltiness, lingering citrus, leafy, grassy hop bitterness finish.

500ml bottle from Zesty Edibles at Gympie. Poured a nice coppery colour unfortunately with very little aroma. Disappointing in that respect. However, was nice and hoppy with a nice bitter finish but I was hoping the Sauvin Hops would show forth a little more on the citrus taste side. Unfortunately no but still a good beer.
