There’s a pile of clichés we won’t deploy here attesting to the fact that you can never take anything in this world for granted. Sure enough, just as Tuatara’s beloved American Pale Ale looked like getting bigger than Texas, our supply of the mighty American hops that defined it started to go wobbly on us. Undeterred, we set to crafting a local solution. Aotearoa Pale Ale takes the spirit of the old APA and reanimates it with a hopping regime that’s as kiwi as a 25 year mortgage. The same-but-different local recipe (Pacific Jade, Cascade, Sauvin and Wai-iti for all you trainspotters) is well within the remit of the original APA, but with a deep, long, new age flavour profile.

330ml nice knobbly bottle from Hippo Beers. Copper brown, good head. Leafy spicy hop aroma. Bitter asparagus hop flavour. Very bitter aftertaste. Unusual and interesting.

Bottle, 11/8/2014. Clear burnished copper pour, sparkling, medium sized creamy head. Juicy aroma, passion fruit with soft grapefruit flesh, floral, honeyed malts. Taste is tropical citrus, tongue tingling, bright grapefruit, some pine. Light body, drinkable and balanced. Really nice, enjoyed this one greatly and had several times.

Citrusy and grassy with a hint of tropical fruit. Caramel malts round the bitterness off nicely and there is a touch of spiciness about it. Soft on bubbles and big on hop aroma and flavor. The lingering bitterness from the hops is somewhat tamed by the malts. A very enjoyable, it’s not a massive hop explosion but there are some subtleties in the flavour which make it quite a unique APA specifically showcasing NZ hops.

Pale amber body topped with a frothy head. Peach and melon are the top and dominant notes, but all overidden by a malty bitterness. A very good ale which I like to treat myself with. Yum, yum.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Beer Market Jaffa. Thanks Tom L. Slightly hazy golden. Aroma of citric hops, a bit stale. Sweetish flavor with malt, citric hops, slightly stale, and decent bitterness. Medium-bodied. Could be fresher but still alright.

Strong fruity aromatics, along with some pine. Quite tart and sharp on the bitterness with some grapefruit and mandarin. Well-carbed. A great all-rounder, unlike Ravi Bopara.
