There’s a pile of clichés we won’t deploy here attesting to the fact that you can never take anything in this world for granted. Sure enough, just as Tuatara’s beloved American Pale Ale looked like getting bigger than Texas, our supply of the mighty American hops that defined it started to go wobbly on us. Undeterred, we set to crafting a local solution. Aotearoa Pale Ale takes the spirit of the old APA and reanimates it with a hopping regime that’s as kiwi as a 25 year mortgage. The same-but-different local recipe (Pacific Jade, Cascade, Sauvin and Wai-iti for all you trainspotters) is well within the remit of the original APA, but with a deep, long, new age flavour profile.

Bottle, pours clear orange with a white head. Fairly malty aroma with a light fruitiness. Taste is more pronounced with resin, peach, citrus and white grapes along the nice malt base. Light to medium sweet with a well dosed firm bitterness. Nice.

Bottle from Kensington Whole Foods. Beautifully tactile dinosaurskin-necked bottle. Sickly peach, menthol, batter and cough sweet aroma with 1 needle of spruce poking through. Murray mint, chip shop batter, peach iced tea and air freshener flavour aping my least favourite kind of US IPA that buries beautiful hops in a sludge of molten cough sweet and honey. A slew of Vomited Southern Comfort. Sorry it’s a 5 from me.

L: pours a clear bronze, minimal carbonation, a finger of creamy white head that leaves terrific lacing. S: there’s a piney note, not too strong, which opens up into a more herbally hop aroma, a solid grassy malt, and perhaps a light honey sweetness. T: a solid malt presence in the flavour, really pronounced and tasty, more herbal tinges, a nice balance with floral hop. F: very low carbonation in the feel, quite creamy and smooth, a mild bitter finish. O: well done again, Tuatara. Well-priced in Japan too. I’ll seek this out again.

(Tuatara APA (Aotearoa Pale Ale)) Bottle 330 ml at home, served into a shaker, ABV 5.8% Deep orange colour on the body, clear, with a small and thin white head on top, with good retention nevertheless. Not much of an aroma to be honest, just some caramel malts and biscuit. Taste follows, caramel malts, biscuit, also some grass now and some pine, with good bitterness on the finish. Medium body, nicely carbonated. Good, it didn’t excite me but drinks nicely.

330ml bottle. Pours a slightly hazy light yellow with pillowy white head. Aroma is fresh hops, citrus fruit, grapefruit, lemon drops and a little pine. Lovely dry hoppy taste. Quite floral but also strong citrus fruits. Good stuff.

More along IPA lines. Similar to their IPA actually. Nice hopping- good earthy bitterness from the er, bittering hops, which gives it much more depth than just the typical samey grapefruit flavours many craft IPAs have. A great beer.

Bottle @ weekly tasting shared with Dutchdrebus. Clear orange golden color, medium sized white to off-white head. Aroma is malts, hops, quite resinous hoppyness. Taste malts, hops, resin, hop bitter. Lovely! Medium body and carbonation. Very nice!

Wow, what’s not to like about this, a wonderful level of drinkable bitterness that is carried by a delicious caramel to a towards dy finish and a lovely lingering mouthfeel. Tasty.
