There’s a pile of clichés we won’t deploy here attesting to the fact that you can never take anything in this world for granted. Sure enough, just as Tuatara’s beloved American Pale Ale looked like getting bigger than Texas, our supply of the mighty American hops that defined it started to go wobbly on us. Undeterred, we set to crafting a local solution. Aotearoa Pale Ale takes the spirit of the old APA and reanimates it with a hopping regime that’s as kiwi as a 25 year mortgage. The same-but-different local recipe (Pacific Jade, Cascade, Sauvin and Wai-iti for all you trainspotters) is well within the remit of the original APA, but with a deep, long, new age flavour profile.

Pours a clear golden colour with sizable white head that dissipates to a small white covering that laces the glass quite nicely. Aromas are pine, citrus, sweet malt. Flavors are grapefruit, pine, medium bitterness, bit of malty sweetness. Overall a very smooth flavorful beer.

Bottle from Rehills, Newcastle. Amber coloured with orange marmalade and toffee flavours, a creamy mouthfeel followed by a bitter pine and orange finish. Excellent!

Pours a slightly hazy golden amber color with a white top that leav s some lace. Aroma is a big burst of citrus, pine needles & grapefruit. Taste is much of the same with a present but very smooth bitterness that balances very well with the malts.

This not only has fantastically fruity, citrusy, flowery hops, but also has a deep malty character and a long bitter finish that leaves you ready for the next mouthful. I took my time.

Lovely still, not quite as fruity as the original american hops based APA. Similar pine & skunk depth though and shovels of citrus flavours.

Great fruity aroma - not quite as intense flavour - great bitterness - well balanced - solid APA but needs more personality.

500ml bottle. Pours clear amber with a medium sized head. Refreshing nose, clearly NZ hops. Despite not being an IPA, the malt backbone isn’t pale at all and works perfectly with the well crafted aromatic hops body. Lasting finish. Well done, Tuatara!

Tap @ Cafe Derat. Clear golden coloured with an off white head. Nose is tropical fruits, peach, mango (deScription courtesy of caesar), super fruity. Flavour is light malted with a lot of tropical fruits, and a nice hop bitterness. Very clean and easy drinkable.

Bottle at Kinloch. Pours a hazy light amber with a small off-white head. Sweet with some dryness. Lots of hops aromas; mostly exotic fruits and hints of citrus. Tiny hints of resin. Full bodied. Medium to high carbonation. Aotearoa Pale Ale... My new favourite style.
