There’s a pile of clichés we won’t deploy here attesting to the fact that you can never take anything in this world for granted. Sure enough, just as Tuatara’s beloved American Pale Ale looked like getting bigger than Texas, our supply of the mighty American hops that defined it started to go wobbly on us. Undeterred, we set to crafting a local solution. Aotearoa Pale Ale takes the spirit of the old APA and reanimates it with a hopping regime that’s as kiwi as a 25 year mortgage. The same-but-different local recipe (Pacific Jade, Cascade, Sauvin and Wai-iti for all you trainspotters) is well within the remit of the original APA, but with a deep, long, new age flavour profile.

The colour was strong copper amber, a bit cloudy, with a strong frothy head and medium carbonation. The aroma was strong green and resiny with hops and light malt balance. The taste had sweet orange citrus malt fruit and long bitter hoppy resin finish. This beer was nice crisp and bitter.

Bottle from Cornelius. Clear golden body with a thin white head. Low carbonation. Light lacing. Aroma of grain, grass and orange. Flavour of biscuit, boiled vegetables and a hint of citrus. Medium body with an oily mouthfeel. Soft fizz. Much simpler than I expected.

Tap at Craft Beer Rising (London, 19 February 2015) Shows light foggy yellow with a finger of white foam. The nose shows hints of earthly mushroom and cannabis with a malty sweetness. The palate is medium bodied with light carbonation. A lot of sweet malts and hints of cannabis. A light bitterness at the end.

Half, keg at Magnet. Hazy apricot coloured body. Patchy white head. Solid lacing. Fresh tropical fruity hops on the nose. Succulent taste of citrus, orange and lemon. Mild malty sweetness beneath. Fresh fruity ending, smoothly bitterness. Pleasant (Stockport 03.02.2015).

Tap. Shakespeares, Sheffield. Hazy amber. Dense, lasting, white head. Quite vinous this. Some apple. Some granary bread. Fruity hops come through after. Taste is a little sharp. Fairly bitter. Finish is more of the same. Not convinced this is right.

Tasted on tap at Fine Wine Delivery Co. Golden brown colour, poured with very little head. Lovely aromas of pine grass hops hits first with definite hints of hay-like malts bursting through. The malt follows through onto the palate and slight pine residue. An enjoyable smooth, long finish persists after a lively mouthful, all despite the lack of much head. Wonderfully easy drinking. A beer very much like cut grass, and perfect for drinking after finishing mowing the lawns on a hot, summer afternoon. One of the first craft beers I ever tried and really encouraged my pursuits in beer. For me, Tuatara’s stand out beer.
