COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Spawned by freewheeling, Californian hopheads, American Pale Ale is the red-headed stepchild of the classic IPA. Big and extroverted with plenty of bitterness, a great APA shows off some fruit on the nose and the kind of earthy, herbaceous complexity Pinot Noir buffs drone on about when they corner you at a fundraiser. Anyway, we had a thumb through the Tuatara atlas and discovered that us Kiwis are New World too. So we reckon it’s time a New Zealand APA pulled on its dockers, flashed its Backberry and generally talked louder than anyone else in the bar. Here it is!

Looks.. Rich solid amber, sml-med off white head. Smells..tropical fruits and grapefruit citrus, a little grassy piney too. Tastes.. Fruity and citrus hop flavours, a little soapy a little bit of caramel before good dose of bitterness.

The head is good, the body light. It smells sweet, hoppy, aromatic.. The taste is hoparomatic, bit malty. Taste is hoparomatic, fruity, bit creamy, nice!

Bottle. Citrus / resin aroma. Bold hops, floral aromas are moderate. Good bitterness and full-bodied flavour. A bit light on malt balance.

Nice golden colour, with a big head. Soft nose, not too hoppy. Good hoppy, piney flavour, easy drinking, but plenty of flavour for hop lovers. Nice soft carbonation.

Bottle from Tuatara brewery. Slightly hazy dark golden, grapefruit, citrus hops dominate, toffee/butterscotch malt, quite good, but I prefer the NZ hopped version.

Draft at Fork and Brewer, paired with Asian noodles. Hazy golden color, thick fluffy white head with giid retention and solid lacing. Aroma of stonefruit. Taste is sweet and malty with a bit of pine at the finish.

Bottle. Pours hazy deep orange gold with off white head and well clung lace. Big hop aromas of citrus, pine, berries over a med breast caramel wheat biscuit grainy malt character. Med body, lightly chewy malt character, decent bitterness, well carbonated finishing zesty and lightly powdery, well balanced and tasty apa

Bottle from liquor barons Carlisle. Pours a dark golden with a quickly fading white head. Nose is a grapefruit and citrus hop bomb!!! Toffee hints in there as well to add sweetness. Dry grapefruit hop bitterness dominates the taste. More citrus and toffee malts coming through. Just has that fresh new zealand hop presence shines through beautifully. Soft carbonation makes for a nice mouthfeel. Very easy to drink. This is a massive pale ale truly hop head heaven very good stuff!!! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Gold pour with a thin off white head. Big floral aroma with some citrus, herbs. Taste is malty, grapefruit, slight resin with good persistent bitterness. I *love* the Aeoteroa Pale Ale, but this is milder and more sessionable.

as expected, the american-ness of this lends a kick to the bitterness. in any other language this would be an ipa. but nevermind that, this is rather good for all its citrus and hop punch.
