Spawned by freewheeling, Californian hopheads, American Pale Ale is the red-headed stepchild of the classic IPA. Big and extroverted with plenty of bitterness, a great APA shows off some fruit on the nose and the kind of earthy, herbaceous complexity Pinot Noir buffs drone on about when they corner you at a fundraiser. Anyway, we had a thumb through the Tuatara atlas and discovered that us Kiwis are New World too. So we reckon itís time a New Zealand APA pulled on its dockers, flashed its Backberry and generally talked louder than anyone else in the bar. Here it is!

A truly excellent indiction of the style, loveley layered hop aroma and complex yet dry malt profile, The best APA I have had the pleasure of

Sampled off tap from Pomeroyís, Excellent golden amber colour with a white head that didnít hang around long after pouring. Lots of hop nose, buckets full of lovely lemon grass, spruce and citrus. Big bitterness is the first of a shockwave of flavours. Hop driven and lip smacking. This is a serious pint for serious hop lovers.

From a 500ml bottle on 3/7/2011. Pours a slightly opaque golden colour with a fine head.Has a a pleasant and quite strong aroma of lychee, citrus and pine hops. The flavours are full on with caramel, orange, grapefruit and honey. As inferred by the label, you get hops in spades, which keep you company long after you downed a sip. The only slightly confusing things is the reference to APA label, as this is much more an American style IPA. And a very good one at that.

Pours dark amber with a small lasting head. Nose shows lots of passion fruit and floral and piney resinous hops. Underneath is cookie dough, caramel and oats. Similarly hoppy flavours with loads of pine. Little supporting malt, just a hint of sweet clean malt and some oats (???). Sharp, full-on bitterness. Nice med-high carbonation.

A very well rounded APA. A bit more body than most with a flavourful citrus hop finish. Not overly brash, making this an easy drinker for any hop lover.

Nose of citrus pine passionfruit minty hops, med body, biscuity malt, nice resinous hop flavour with moderately dry lingering bitterness in the finish. Well attenuated and very drinkable. nice drop

Bottle. Pours a slightly hazy light bronze with a large rocky cream coloured head. Lots of lacing as it falls away leaving only the smallest layer. Aromas are dominated by US hops. Grapefruit and lots of pine resin. Just a hint of light caramel in support. Briallint stuff. Flavours are all about huge resiny hop bitterness. Medium mouthfeel. Great stuff.

UPDATED: AUG 3, 2011 Pours a hazy amber orange with a very small tan head. Aromas of marmalade, citrus, honey. Was expecting a little more on the nose but itís still a nice aroma. Has some nice pine and eartchy hops. Good balance of citrus in there too. Good beer overrall. Super easy drinking

I like this beer. Big floral marmaladey, grapefruit nose and nice and tart in the mouth. Makes me think of a grassy field in the summer sun, on a hill somewhere. Probably overlooking a river and I donít have to go to work very soon. Feels good in your mouth to swish around, giving you more orange rind aftersmack. Good headiness at 5.8%. They should all be like this.
