Spawned by freewheeling, Californian hopheads, American Pale Ale is the red-headed stepchild of the classic IPA. Big and extroverted with plenty of bitterness, a great APA shows off some fruit on the nose and the kind of earthy, herbaceous complexity Pinot Noir buffs drone on about when they corner you at a fundraiser. Anyway, we had a thumb through the Tuatara atlas and discovered that us Kiwis are New World too. So we reckon itís time a New Zealand APA pulled on its dockers, flashed its Backberry and generally talked louder than anyone else in the bar. Here it is!

Clear, slightly fizzy golden beer with a thick frothy head. Dry grapefruit aroma. Flavour is similar but with a touch of fruity sweetness to lend it some balance. Could go being colder than I had it.

Draft. Pours a cloudy amber color. Aroma and taste are citrus and piney hops with malty sweetness.

Bottle. Pours clear dark amber with a medium beige creamy somewhat lasting head that leaves some lacing, Aroma of citrus, hay, and rich malt. Lightly bitter and lightly sweet taste, rich flavors of malt and caramel, average carbonation, light to medium body, thin feel and a light malty finish. Thin body is out of balance with the rich malt. Not bad though.

pours copper gold, fine hoppy aroma, taste is all bitter hops with citrus fruit & malt, must compare this with the Aotearoa Pale Ale one day

Bottle from Archive Beer Boutique May 2013. Dark amber colour with a good head. Citrus and pine needle aromas. Feels like it is bigger than 5.7% ABV.

Gives a thick head. Good in IPA glass. Nice piney aroma with US hops giving light citrus. Got malt in taste and bitterness that is nice and keeps on giving. 5.8%. 50ml. 2.4 std drinks. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

I love APAís - this ainít one - itís way more along the high octane Brit bitter lines due to the massive malt presence - far too thick on the tongue - like drinking a digestive biscuit - hits of great piney/resiny hops drowning in malt. Not the Hop Heaven I expected. Disappointed.

I'm biased. I love this beer. Pours Amber gold. Heaps of hop aroma and a pillowy head. Great hoppy taste over sweet malt. Well balanced to my mind. Lovely lace on the glass. Currently my first choice beer.

Crisp, fresh and smooth APA, soft aftertaste. Excellent kiwi craft beer, well done Tuatara.

Produces up a burnished orange, misted and not quite clear. Very fine, intermittent carbonation ebbs slowly to atmosphere below a billowing, cappuccino foam that leaves a thick lace. Nose has a candy essence to it and is awash with ripe grapefruit, navel and blood orange, rose musk, camphor and pine. Quite astringent and tart on the palate with a rough, herbaceous, bitter hop swallow. Quite lean in body, vinous and spritzy. Low malt with just a husky, grainy after thought peeping through. Piney, matchstick linger. Fruit is tart, underripe, almost sour as opposed to that glorious aroma. It is a little hard to drink to be honest. A fresh sample so Iím guessing this is supposed to be this puckering. A strange one. (50cL, BB 12/12/14, The Liquor Shed, Jandakot)
