Spawned by freewheeling, Californian hopheads, American Pale Ale is the red-headed stepchild of the classic IPA. Big and extroverted with plenty of bitterness, a great APA shows off some fruit on the nose and the kind of earthy, herbaceous complexity Pinot Noir buffs drone on about when they corner you at a fundraiser. Anyway, we had a thumb through the Tuatara atlas and discovered that us Kiwis are New World too. So we reckon it’s time a New Zealand APA pulled on its dockers, flashed its Backberry and generally talked louder than anyone else in the bar. Here it is!

Crisp, fresh and smooth APA, soft aftertaste. Excellent kiwi craft beer, well done Tuatara.

Produces up a burnished orange, misted and not quite clear. Very fine, intermittent carbonation ebbs slowly to atmosphere below a billowing, cappuccino foam that leaves a thick lace. Nose has a candy essence to it and is awash with ripe grapefruit, navel and blood orange, rose musk, camphor and pine. Quite astringent and tart on the palate with a rough, herbaceous, bitter hop swallow. Quite lean in body, vinous and spritzy. Low malt with just a husky, grainy after thought peeping through. Piney, matchstick linger. Fruit is tart, underripe, almost sour as opposed to that glorious aroma. It is a little hard to drink to be honest. A fresh sample so I’m guessing this is supposed to be this puckering. A strange one. (50cL, BB 12/12/14, The Liquor Shed, Jandakot)

This has a great look, decent head, nice lacing, soft aromas give way to a full mouthfeel and carry of a hoppy beer that finishes well and not dry. Its very drinkable is what this is.

FINALLY. Ive been living in the West Coast in NZ for the past 4 months and FINALLY I found a worthy beer to buy from the local mart. The shelves are just packed with run of the mill working class ales. This beauty has the power and flavor of an extra IPA without being over bearing or too harsh (as my gf remarks about the double trouble). I personally prefer the double trouble, but this one has more mass appeal.

Keg - Pomeroy’s, Christchurch. A clear golden amber with a fine, creamy white head with fair retention. Slightly tart mid fruits and yeast complexities with grassy, leafy hop characters and hints of a pale malt sweetness. Light to medium body, medium carbonation with a finish of fine length pledged between subtly sour fruit and gently bitter hop notes. Perhaps a bit ’grubby’ but in an acceptable way and it’s certainly quaffable enough.

hazy pale amber with fluffy white head. lovely lemon pith and herbal hops on the nose, subdued now perhaps but i reckon would be lovely fresh. medium bodied, fairly dry bitterness, some gooseberry nelson sauvin character and perhaps motueka too. Lovely stuff and wish i’d tried it when i had the chance in NZ.

Great warm, malty aromas from the bottle and American hops. Pours clear with good sized head. Light caramel head and honey amber colour. Great malt and hop flavours as promised by the aroma. A touch of bitterness and overall well balanced with great body and mouth feel.

Now with 5.8% and it also comes in a very cool bottle with a "Sauron-Eye crown cap". Good looking ale with a distinctive hoppy smell. Lots of citrus and bitter hops make it "californian" or "American", but I’ve had lots of british and even german IPA’s with a similiar complexity - so nothing i could clearly identify as "American". But nevermind, it tastes great, not exaggerated and it is well balanced.

UPDATED: MAY 16, 2015 re rate for Keg- Big floral aroma and some piney hops as well. Head disappears a bit quickly leaving a very carbonated amber body. Taste is silky, creamy, and spicy mainly from carbonation. Big on crisp finishing hops very dry finish. Finish is a little thin and watery. Good beer not great.

Nice off white head. Pours a lovely Amber color. Fruity hoppy aroma with a similar flavor. Hint of malt with a lingering bitterness.
