Spawned by freewheeling, Californian hopheads, American Pale Ale is the red-headed stepchild of the classic IPA. Big and extroverted with plenty of bitterness, a great APA shows off some fruit on the nose and the kind of earthy, herbaceous complexity Pinot Noir buffs drone on about when they corner you at a fundraiser. Anyway, we had a thumb through the Tuatara atlas and discovered that us Kiwis are New World too. So we reckon itís time a New Zealand APA pulled on its dockers, flashed its Backberry and generally talked louder than anyone else in the bar. Here it is!

UPDATED: AUG 3, 2011 Pours a hazy amber orange with a very small tan head. Aromas of marmalade, citrus, honey. Was expecting a little more on the nose but itís still a nice aroma. Has some nice pine and eartchy hops. Good balance of citrus in there too. Good beer overrall. Super easy drinking

I like this beer. Big floral marmaladey, grapefruit nose and nice and tart in the mouth. Makes me think of a grassy field in the summer sun, on a hill somewhere. Probably overlooking a river and I donít have to go to work very soon. Feels good in your mouth to swish around, giving you more orange rind aftersmack. Good headiness at 5.8%. They should all be like this.

A truly excellent indiction of the style, loveley layered hop aroma and complex yet dry malt profile, The best APA I have had the pleasure of

Bottle. Lovely light amber colour with a big thick head of tiny white bubbles that lasts and lasts. Mango, peach, fresh earth, pine needles and cut flowers on the nose. Sweet malt, firm bitterness, passionfruit and mango flavour. Smooth, rich mouthfeel. Slight aftertaste of burnt rubber

Bottle at a tasting 15th of January 2011. Rather nice pale ale, quite fruity in the aroma, with a nice floral kick. Taste is quite nice, rather heavy hops for a pale ale, but im not going to complain about more hops! Lemon, orange, apricot and sweet caramel, followed by a nice soft bitter finish.

Bottle. Clear copper with a large off white head. Aroma of grapefruit, pine, light caramel, nectarine, a little cleaning fluid. Taste is only slightly sweet with more fruit than caramel before piney bitterness. Aromatic bitter finish is not dry. Thereís not a riot of flavours here - just a few good ones speaking out in ringing tones.

Tap at Cookie. Nice, a bit too bitter though. Aromas of grass, and caramel. Taste is hoppy, with long-lasting bitterness. Palate is creamy, and medium bodied. Amber, with a frothy head.
