Spawned by freewheeling, Californian hopheads, American Pale Ale is the red-headed stepchild of the classic IPA. Big and extroverted with plenty of bitterness, a great APA shows off some fruit on the nose and the kind of earthy, herbaceous complexity Pinot Noir buffs drone on about when they corner you at a fundraiser. Anyway, we had a thumb through the Tuatara atlas and discovered that us Kiwis are New World too. So we reckon it’s time a New Zealand APA pulled on its dockers, flashed its Backberry and generally talked louder than anyone else in the bar. Here it is!

A really hoppy beer. If your a hop head, as I am, you will enjoy this beer. Great hop bitterness, that lingers on the finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Burnt orange colour, frothy white head, that as it fades brings grapefruit and bergamot to the nose. Well balanced, the malt smooths away but doesn’t overwhelm the sharp citrus flavours, Lovely lingering tail. A very nice ale; hoppy, bright and warming.

Light Amber, frothy head, good lacing. Aroma: floral and hops, peachy. Bitter then sweet then bitter aftertaste, long lasting.

medium amber color. Apples and oranges, soft hoppy nose. Not so American. Medium body. Dry somewhat bitter mouth. Decent, but lack malt backbone and seems more like a crowd pleaser than a pale ale that is trying to take it to the next level.

500ml bottle split with JK. Clean and strong citrus aroma, cloudy in the glass that never settled, relatively soft carbonation with a kick of bitter hops though not as pronounced as others. My favourite all-round beer at the moment with the most perfect palate I can imagine. Opened this as Ireland kicked off against Australia in the RWC and enjoyed it as Ireland proceeded with their demolition job. This may be a good reason behind the high score for the beer.

My favourite Hoppy beer in NZ at the moment. Crisp, clean and a ton of hop aroma and flavour without the huge bitterness so common in this style(although there is plenty of bitterness in there).

Tap @ Brew on Quay. Hazy, orange-gold pour with a short, mottled white head leaving heavy lace. Fruit and flower nose - peaches. Medium-light body and medium carbonation. Citrus, toast, pine, fruit. Going great up until the finish, which is on the watery side and rather lightweight.

Sampled off tap from Pomeroy’s, Excellent golden amber colour with a white head that didn’t hang around long after pouring. Lots of hop nose, buckets full of lovely lemon grass, spruce and citrus. Big bitterness is the first of a shockwave of flavours. Hop driven and lip smacking. This is a serious pint for serious hop lovers.

From a 500ml bottle on 3/7/2011. Pours a slightly opaque golden colour with a fine head.Has a a pleasant and quite strong aroma of lychee, citrus and pine hops. The flavours are full on with caramel, orange, grapefruit and honey. As inferred by the label, you get hops in spades, which keep you company long after you downed a sip. The only slightly confusing things is the reference to APA label, as this is much more an American style IPA. And a very good one at that.

Pours dark amber with a small lasting head. Nose shows lots of passion fruit and floral and piney resinous hops. Underneath is cookie dough, caramel and oats. Similarly hoppy flavours with loads of pine. Little supporting malt, just a hint of sweet clean malt and some oats (???). Sharp, full-on bitterness. Nice med-high carbonation.
