Spawned by freewheeling, Californian hopheads, American Pale Ale is the red-headed stepchild of the classic IPA. Big and extroverted with plenty of bitterness, a great APA shows off some fruit on the nose and the kind of earthy, herbaceous complexity Pinot Noir buffs drone on about when they corner you at a fundraiser. Anyway, we had a thumb through the Tuatara atlas and discovered that us Kiwis are New World too. So we reckon it’s time a New Zealand APA pulled on its dockers, flashed its Backberry and generally talked louder than anyone else in the bar. Here it is!

Very very hoppy for an APA. Heavy on the Amarillo! A bit *too* aggressive for my pale ale preferences...but happy to see hoppy beers sprouting out in NZ!

Scaly lizard bottle. Clear golden color with a one finger white head. Aroma is tangerine, grapefruit, dank, earth. Flavor is dry and balanced, quite NZ-ish, hoppy, tasty. Medium bodied and crisp. A good’un.

Clear pale yellow with white head. Awesome fresh aroma of lemon and pine and tangerine. Really yummy! The taste is even better. Great fresh hop flavor and bitterness in perfect balance with a medium bodied beer and moderate alcohol level. Gotta love the kiwi hops! Good stuff!

Doskonały aromat owoców egzotycznych, słodkich owoców, nieco klimatów leśnych. Wielka, gęsta piana. W smaku podobnie, dochodzi także czarna porzeczka. Wszystko bardzo intensywne. Wysokie wysycenie, sporo ciała, w sumie chyba bliżej mu do IPA, aniżeli do APA. Bardzo dobre!

Very easy going. Pale golden with a lasting white head. Nice bitter aroma. Soft fizz rolls off the palate with a perfect palate. Pilsner malt goes great with the natural hops..

(Bottle) Pours clear golden with good white head. Lovely fresh vibrant aroma of grapefruit and pine. Light body with excellent carbonation: both bright and mouthfilling. The taste is driven by hops from start to finish; they are pleasant and not overwhelming, but they are dominant. There’s some nice malt tastes in the background in the mid palate. The hops give a significant bitter finish. A great APA.
