Tuatara Brewing from New Zealand and Beerhere from Denmark laugh at the tyranny of distance. They’ve come together over 18,000kms to create Hopcat, a hoppy red ale brewed with the brand new kiwi hop, Waimea. Debuting in a flash of bright orange with an off-white head, Hopcat releases hop aromas of pine and strawberry. The flavour is bready malts and caramelised sugars while the long finish leaves a rich and decadent mouthfeel. If you really want Hopcat to purr, serve it between 7-9 degrees C.

UPDATED: SEP 12, 2015 restrained tropical fruit aroma in an amber copper pour. Nicely balanced hop malt taste with a sustained bitter finish. Interestingly different from the regular antipodean IPAs.

Bottle from Plonk. Dark reddish-amber, quickly dissipating fine head, lots of hop resin, strawberry for sure, lots of caramel, quite bitter, thick texture, quite good.

This is a ripping beer to look at but there’s something slightly wrong about the nose, with the smell of rubber reacting badly with the pine and some light nougat. The flavour is much more palatable, with lovely soft hops that provide a surprisingly tart lemon aftertaste. There’s a nice caramel nougat malt flavour with some spearmint residing in the back of the throat. This one’s just a nose clip away from perfection.

650mL bottle. Pours light amber with a white head and a very nice caramel/berry aroma. It taste like a beer flavoured toffee bar, very unique and compelling. Not like any beer i have had previously.

I added the commercial description to this beer and I’ve thought that this wasn’t a terribly good idea because people are suggestible when it comes to imagining flavours. Yep, pine and strawberry, caramelised sugars and bread. They’re all there. I would only think to add tangelo to those descriptions and this seems to be my predominant impression of Waimea hops. The impression of the beer overall is favourable but I think in terms of body it could be a little bigger. That said, I’m glad I purchased it. (I wish someone would pay me to drink beer, or is that a little obvious for anyone on this site?)
