Develop an active interest in Belgium’s monastic Trappist brews and it’ll quickly become obvious that the Low Countries weren’t named after the alcohol content of their favourite beers. Tuatara Tripel is is brewed in that same intense style, rich on the nose with esters and hop aromas balanced to perfection. It’s possessed of a sustained and lively body that instantly fills the mouth with flavour. Meanwhile a smooth aftertaste ensures the kind of drinkability that by rights no 8.5% alc/vol beer ought to possess.

Exactly what you’d expect from a kiwi style belgian tripel; clear, smooth beer with a fruity finish, in my opinion better than the belgian equivalents.

Bottle. Light and slightly cloudy. Light carbonation. As usual, Tuatara manage to sneak in a banana aroma/taste. Also biscuit dough notes - as well as citrus. Alcohol very well hidden. Slightly sweet. Not a favorite style generally - but pretty drinkable.

Bottle. Clear gold with a small white head, low bead. Aroma of honey, lightly spiced brioche-y dough, apricots, flowers. Lowish carbonation, but it works. A curious trick here is that it is very yeasty but the honeyed fruit flavours seem very clean - barely ripe apricots, some sweet oranges, hints of banana - and ring out very nicely. It’s very sweet but dries out quite a lot with very moderate spices and discreet bitterness. Alcohol is very well hidden. Bitterness and coriander creep up after a while in a dryish orange-tinged finish. Good.

Not a bad beer. Looks ok and has an alright flavour to it, but just lacks that something extra. Should age well though.

UPDATED: JUN 14, 2014 Another excellent brew from the Kapiti coasters. Nicely balanced and hides it’s strength well. Missing only a little of the complexity of the benchmark Belgians.

Delicious well balanced drop with high alcohol and high taste. Great story well executed. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

If I wanted to buy home brew I wouldn’t even have considered this as an option. I don’t tip out many beers but this one was good for the drain. I didn’t even consider giving it to the dog, or our lemon tree. Cloudy nonsense with yukky yeast lumps, please forgive tuatara, god. cos I won’t and if your reading this, I want my money back. I could do better if I had one hand on it like you obviously did

Huge coriander aroma with hint of banana esters. Ester flavour with huge coriander after taste. Very smooth.

quite a fantastic tripel really. rather sweet with brown sugar and banana, and alcohol is present but not distracting. very good.

Mostly golden with a touch of amber. Sweet but yeasty with an almost champagne-like yeast note. The aroma has lemons an champagne yeast. I think that what would otherwise be a sweet, fruity tripel is salvaged by this yeast character, as it both dries it out and adds complexity.
