4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Ferris (491) - Edmonton, Alberta, CANADA - MAY 14, 2013
Bottle - Pine, citrus and the candy floss sweetness I love. Clear orange with a thin ring of head. The malty sweetness starts, then followed by the bitterness and alcohol head with a finally of pine and citrus. Medium body with a dry finish. A huge hop bomb that is over the top but not unbalanced or overwhelming. A great Double IPA.
3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Davros (1477) - Melbourne, AUSTRALIA - MAY 13, 2013
Pours dark amber with a small head.
Very fruity aroma but also a lot of sweet clean malt. Some booze. Caramel, pine and resinous hops dominate.
Very aggressive flavours, with a big hoppy bitterness throughout. A fair bit of clean sweet malt as well, but the resinous, grapefruity hop bitterness wins out.
Nice moderate carbonation.
The bitterness seems to sharp and aggressive.
4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20 Maris (749) - Canberra, AUSTRALIA - MAY 12, 2013
From a 650ml bottle on 12/5/2013 (shared with Butz). Pours a clear dark golden with a small head. Has a very strong hoppy aroma, with lots of fruity and resiny notes. Flavour wise, there’s a big caramel and toffee malt backbone, masses of sweet citrus and stone fruit (orange, mandarin and apricot), a bit of honey, and a huge grapefruity bitterness at the back. There a hint of warming alcohol in there as well. The palate is realively slick and the carbonation modest. A very enjoyable imperial.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 DylansDad (157) - NEW ZEALAND - MAY 8, 2013
This is my first bottle and I’m still trying to come to grips with it, there’s so much going on. The DANK! The RESIN! The dankly resinous forests of the Pacific NW have bled their guts into my glass and mixed with Jurassic tar-fields incongruously tasting of citrus; what were they eating? The alcohol warmth in the oily finish is very fitting for tonight, which has brought the first taste of the coming Southern Hemisphere winter. "Oily finish" sounds a bit like "oily fish", doesn’t it? Don’t get me started about the health-giving, restorative properties of hop oils, which I have discovered through personal experience, just don’t.
3.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Gramoit (251) - AUSTRALIA - MAY 7, 2013
Massive grapefruit nose, great on the nose wow. Falls away a little from there however still a pretty dam good beer.
3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 reebtogi (3262) - Edmonton, Alberta, CANADA - MAY 5, 2013
650ml bottle pours a pale golden amber color with a 2 finger white head that retains well and settles down to reveal some nice lacing on the glass. Aroma is grapefruit and other tropical fruits with some hints of caramel. Taste is a fruity and malty sweetness with a citrusy hop bitterness all balanced together nicely. Even though this one is a little on the sweet side, this is still an outstanding DIPA. Highly recommended.
4.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20 davidm (1774) - Melbourne, AUSTRALIA - MAY 4, 2013
Bottle from Slowbeer. Great hoppy beer, never-ending flavour. Aromas of grass, flowers, liquorice. Taste is mostly bitter, long length. Palate is syrupy, full bodied. Amber, with a frothy head.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 9/20 dlwheeler (1) - - MAY 3, 2013 does not count
Super choppy floral nose with a lingering bitterness in the palate. Underlying sweetness trying to balance the hops but not 100% succeeding. Perfect beer for a hop head.
3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20 maneliquor (1553) - Perth, AUSTRALIA - APR 9, 2013
Bottle from Mane Liquor. Pours dull orange with a small, firm white head.Nose is quite resinous, sticky and full of dried fruits. Kind of like a sticky date pudding. Loads of sticky and sweet caramel resin with heavy grapefruit and dried fruits - especially apricot. Heavy bitter sweet tones and an easy going finish for such high IBU’s. Good stuff that’s for sure
4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20 stoutnick (164) - Brisbane, AUSTRALIA - APR 4, 2013
Appearance is peachy. Aroma is bright tropical fruit - grapefruit. lychee, kiwi, paw paw. Taste is big sweetness, followed by fruity and then bitter and resinous. Palate is a lingering fruitiness but not too damaging. Overall, one of the best DIPAs i’ve had, and probably the best outside the US for me. The sweet fruitiness and bitter hops are very well balanced. Only critique is it is perhaps too sweet, but that’s a minor quibble.
