Calling Double Trouble a "hop showcase" might imply that this brutal 167 IBU monster has your best interests at heart. If your answer to the question, "How much hopping would you like?" is simply "more", this is what you wish for. The malt base and Chico yeast together construct the perfect platform for the multiple additions of so many hop varieties no mere beer label could label them all. Your overwhelmed taste buds will know the feeling.

Here we go with a Kiwi wonder! Slightly hazy golden, cream medium head. Nose is sweet malts and hops. This beer has lots of hops. Loads. And they merge wonderfully with a malty and (tropical) fruity taste. Make you ask for more. Glad it came in a 500ml bottle!

500ml Bottle. Poured hazy amber with nice head. Drank with a big smack of bitter hops but badly lacked balance, and lingering bitterness. 167 IBU wrecks your palate here, but not in a good, shock and awe way, like Green Flash. Would not try another

Big hoppy aroma, very complex. Lots of mouth filling malt and a firm bitterness.

Lightly hazy gold beer, tidy cream colour head. Palate is finely minerally crisp. The smooth pale malts impart a little sweetness. Rich skunky hops and thick pine. Mild hop spice. Trace of tropical friuts. Spicy skunky finish. A very rich DIPA but it’s also incredibly drinkable. Excellent stuff.

Keg at Brewdog. Hazy dark orange, still, small foamy white head. Aroma is hard to place but there’s some bubblegum, Turkish delight, cucumber, flowers and toffee. Body is medium, smooth, low carbonation. Taste is light caramel, twiggy, sugary with some honey, light citrus twang. Nice.

Keg at BD CJ. It pours clear dark orange-amber with a small beige head. The rich, oily, stewed orange, peach, marmalade, toffee and apricot tart. The taste is rich, bitter-sweet, piney, resinous, alcohol boost, wood, peppery spice, grapefruit rind, mild astringency, hop burn, dank skunky hoppage, damp leaves, grassy, toffee, soap with a long, lingering bitter finish. Medium+ body and moderate carbonation. Big old hop-bomb. Although I enjoy many aspects of this beer it is pretty rough around the edges. Quite a lot of alcohol & IBU boost though. Alright, but not quite what I had hoped for.

50cl bottle at The Globe, Hong Kong on 07/06/2015. Poured into a snifter glass. Clear orange copper colour with a thick white head. Fantastic aroma of hops , pine and citrus. Heavy on citrus, hops and high on IBU. Great balance; the alcohol is well hidden but still noticeable. An awesome NZ ale.

Clear light orange-copper. White thin head with big bubbles. Smells of piney hop, crystal malt, maple syrup, light spice. Tastes of resin piney hop, light lemony soapy frothy finish. Body is medium-to-thick, slick, gently frothy. Resinous. Crisp malt aroma is nice. Big, bitter but still very drinkable.

500ml bottle from Hop Leaf at home. Slightly hazy orange golden pour. Aroma is ripe mango and strong resin hops. Taste follows - big rich tropical fruity and resinous hops. Big booziness and bitterness that lasts. One of the best DIPAs - a standard to which others should be compared. Lasting boozy warmth. Very big but alarmingly drinkable. Definitely get again.
