Wheat beers have been around for centuries, but you can still startle unsuspecting New Zealanders with a good one. Most beer malts are barley-based, but a portion of wheat in the mash results in a sweeter, cloudier base. In combination with a Weinstephan yeast, this produces distinctive flavours of ripe banana, vanilla and clove. (Don’t be alarmed, they all do that.) Hop additions are used to balance the sweetness, but things never get bitter like the Australians when they lose the cricket.

Pours cloudy, banana on the nose, cloves of course... taste is not on the sour lemon side of the hefes but sweeter, finish is mildly bitter. The viscosity is quite creamy, which is what brought this above a 2.9. My favourite New Zealand hefeweizen so far.

Pours hazy gold, not much head, bit disappointing. Nice banana and clove nose, bit of yeasty tang. Taste follows the nose, mellow and not overdone. Like many Tuataras, a nicely done if not overly adventurous twist on the style.

330ml brown bottle. Yellow pour with expected haze, small white head on top with creamy edges. Soft banana nose with light wheat. Taste has wheat, light banana and minerally yeast. Slight citrus note in the finish. Light body with average carbonation. Overall the yeast under performs, not enough clove or banana or other hefe like characters to push this further... a bit bland.

330ml bottle pours straw in color with a finger of white head that settles quitte quickly leaving some spotted lacing on the glass. Aroma is bananas, grass and yeast with a hint of cloves. Taste is light fruity and grainy malt sweetness with a grassy hop bitterness and hints of clove and yeast in the finish. Light to medium bodied with moderate carbonation leaving a nice tickle on the palate. A pretty decent brew.

Bottle from mixed 6-pack. Hazy yellow with a light head. Light banana scent. Soft dusty body. Light flavour, some banana, lemon, yeast. Kind of like a brew pub mainstay.

Banana and cloves on the nose and pours nice and cloudy like a good hefe should. Quite light in flavours and not much there to engage the palate.

Good solid Hefeweizen, orangey amber colour, a little soft on the palate, not quite the real deal, but a good overall attempt

The colour was pale orange amber brown, with a light head, and light carbonation. It was quite cloudy. The aroma had wheat, yeast and banana fruit. There was orange citrus fruit, with wheat and yeast flavours, light spice, and a medium crisp bitter finish. Light bodied, crisp and strong wheat flavours.

Pretty good try for a German Hefe copy! A bit too sweet though, and the palate is not as soft as german Hefe. Still really pleasant to drink, with a strong wheat taste.

Got this served at a good temperature, with a medium sized, foamy, fizzy, off white head that quickly faded and no lace. Color is a very slightly hazy amber with some tiny bubble trails. Aroma is banana, malt, yeast. Flavor’s similar to nose, sweetness is a little too prominant, the carbonation while too fizzy, helps against the sweetness. Body is ok otherwise. Finish is like flavor, of average length. I’d have another these only if I had a hankerin’ for a weisse and there were no other choices and the other beers were lame.
