COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Wheat beers have been around for centuries, but you can still startle unsuspecting New Zealanders with a good one. Most beer malts are barley-based, but a portion of wheat in the mash results in a sweeter, cloudier base. In combination with a Weinstephan yeast, this produces distinctive flavours of ripe banana, vanilla and clove. (Don’t be alarmed, they all do that.) Hop additions are used to balance the sweetness, but things never get bitter like the Australians when they lose the cricket.

Bottle from Coop - Tuatara Mix 6 (3 of 6) Pours a clear golden yellow with no haziness to speak of. Bubbly white head dissipates quickly. Has the look of sparkling apple juice. Aroma is heavy on yeast, mild fruitiness (banana), very mild herbal note.. Taste is quite sweet, and doesn’t have the natural grainy tones, or any of the mouthfeel of your typical hefeweisen. Sure doesnt look like a hefe, either. Not exciting - unsure if possibly a bad bottle.

Bottle from Tipping Point. Too sweet and malty. Clear amber pour. Not a repeat.

Cloudy draw colour. Ginger / banana / bubblegum aromas. Almost no sweetness, but the same lingering ginger taste. Very smooth, not bad.

Cloudy amber with slight white head. Great aroma - orangey citrus and banana esters. Medium body with lively refreshing carbonation. Fruity start to taste with some citrus and banana notes. Pleasant hoppy bitterness develops through the mid palate into a tasty finish. Great refreshing and tasty hefe.

Some malt and wheat aroma. Cloudy, cider-like appearance. Small white head. Yellow colour. Moderate wheay flavours, but not much in the way of malt or hops. Adequately balanced but light overall. Not a lot of mouth feel.

Aroma: banana, clove and vanilla with bready overtones. Flavor: banana, clove and vanilla with some wheat. Tastes like Weihenstephaner Hefe -- not entirely surprising given use of thier yeast strain. Feel: crisp carbonation; light boy but not watery. O: a very good German style hefe with a slightly bolder flavor than average.

330 ml bottle bought at YATA in Grand Century Place, Mong Kok.

Cloudy hazy golden yellow orange colour with substantial dirt- like yeast sediments; One and a half finger head with crumpety white foam which lasts for about 90 seconds; small sticky lacing and low carbonation; Pretty fragment aroma of banana, vanilla, orange, malt, cloves, and coriander; Slightly tart and light sweet taste of light malt, with light banana, cloves, spices, light lemon and very light herbal grass; Mid to light body, slightly slick and quite crisp palate; Mouth feel is slightly dry but crispy, with good dose of light malt, wheat, light banana for a good weiss base. Also very yeasty, with pretty nice cloves and spicey taste. Nice! Hoppiness is light lemon and herbal nose, good lemony and shade of herb taste, plus the a shade of bitterness. Also no astringency, pretty much wheaty and malty finish; Pretty dry after taste, very easy and crispy to mouth.

Comments: This is simple, no complicated or explosive tastes like Paulaner or Lammsbräu, but it is all round solid, good looking, decent head, pretty bright banana and clove nose and taste, and a just-right body and crisp mouth feel. A cut above the middle, I will buy again for sure.
