3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Sunny gold and bright as bright. Well fuelled, persistent fluffy white head drabs a cloud of foam down the glass. Aroma a blend of peppery, herbal hops, lemon zest and toasted grains. Soft, foamy mouthfeel and very light bodied. Fresh chilled it was dry, dusty and dominated by a New Zealand hop back end that is fruity, citric and herbaceous – low bitterness, also peppery especially after the swallow. Malt sweetens as it warms. Very easy drinking, balanced and quaffable. Don’t quite get that they grasped a Deutsches Helles but a tasty lager none the less! (33cL, BB 29/09/12, Freo Doctor)

3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 15/20
Aroma is straw, lemon grass, light graininess and slight sulphur. Taste is a light sweet maltiness paired with a fairly well balanced bitterness. There is slight tartiness on finish but it doesn’t last long. Fairly basic character overall. Body is straw/gold with a bubbly pearl head that retains fairly poorly.

3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 10/20
A serviceable brew that stands up to most of the competition. Competitive local price makes it a no-brainer safe bet in New Zealand.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
(Bottle) Clear pale amber with short lived small white head. Aroma not very distinct, but also not special - sort of malty and vegetabley. Refreshing light body and lively carbonation. Pleasant and unusual flavour profile - subtle, low-key, pleasant all the way trough with a very late aftertaste making a significant appearance at the end. The main backbone of the taste is pleasant sweetish malt with some subtle fruitiness. The finish has a developing combination of hop bitterness and biscuit. Nice beer.

2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
Tasted 8/2/2014. Poured a clear golden colour with a one-finger white foamy head that diminished quickly to a collar that produced poor lace. Carbonation very low with medium sized bubbles. Aroma of mild malt if anything at all; no obvious hops. Taste of sweetish caramel malt but no real bitterness. Light body. Bland.

5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20
Not much to say about the appearance: it looks like a lager. But the taste is phenomenal. As good as any Bavarian lager, but with an aftertaste that explodes on the tongue after a few seconds, and really completes the experience. My new favourite lager, by a long shot.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Cereal / grape nut malt with faint spice and lemon noble hops in the nose. Has a pleasant mineral character that speaks of German hard water and while the crispness and malt texture are enjoyable, there are some quiet but still off-putting notes of raw Pilsner malt, rice cake, butter, corn kernels and the like... it’s a crude barley malt smell similar to the ambient air inside a maltery. Light body, light sweetness, low bitterness, some malt acidity holds it up but the sweet rice cake and raw cereal / grape nut flavor isn’t something I can get into. Crisp and lip-smacking finish is decent but it does dissipate rather quickly into a watery, thin finish. Clear gold body, still with a short white head, from draft at Andrew Andrew in Auckland.

Bottle from the Tuatara Mix Pack (1 of 6) 5%. Bold golden pour with a thick, white foam, decent retention. Aroma is strong malty sweetness, caramel, ripe fleshy fruits, cereal grains, mild grassiness. Taste is boldly hopped for a lager, lots of earthy notes, but balance is quite impressive. Crisp, refreshing, and smooth tasting.
