JMerritt (1313), Macomb, Illinois, USA Sep 27, 2009 Sampled at 2009 WIU Performing Arts Society Beerfest. Semi-cloudy two-tone brownish plum red with a very small white head. Very toasty/roasty malt aroma, with some ripened fruit (dates and raisins) and honey roasted peanuts. Definitely a fruitcake feel to the nose with the hints of bready yeast and grains. Flavor has a lot of raisin, and finish is rather grainy (wheat, straw). More complex as you enjoy it as the ripened fruit notes being to pop. Really nice. Ryan82SM (231), Louisville, Kentucky, USA Sep 23, 2009 Malty, toffee aroma with chocolate. Dark brown with tan head. Toffee, caramel, chocolate and coffee flavors. Palate is rich and creamy. Molto Delicioso! NJJereme (262), Saint Petersburg, Florida, USA Sep 11, 2009 Bottle. Pours a dark brown color with a nice, fairly large fluffy tan head. Aromas of malts, chocolate, and a little bit of coffee. Has a fairly creamy mouth feel, definitely can feel an alcoholic burn as it goes down. Medium to heavily bodied. Good. mcdav2154 (295), Germany Aug 18, 2009 Dark reddish mohogany color with a medium tan head that disappears quickly. No lacing. Grainy malty smell with dark fruits. Taste is sweet malt and caramel. Aftertaste is like eating a box of raisins which leaves a sticky sweet mouthfeel. Doppelbocks in my opinion are usually oversweet and not enough hop bite. This is no different but still a pretty good beer. jjuf1853 (467), Land O Lakes, Florida, USA Jul 22, 2009 Bottle pours a dark brown with a slight reddish hue and a foamy tan head. Sweet, roasted malt aroma. Flavor has caramel and brown sugar sweetness mixed into the roasted malty notes. Nice aftertaste that lingers for a while. A nice doppelbock. GranvilleTim (467), Granville, Illinois, USA Jul 21, 2009 Reddish-brown pour with light tan head. Sweet aroma. Caramel malt. Nice flavor- little sweet, some nuttiness. Leaves a nice aftertaste, The head went down a lot after several sips. Tasty doppelbock. danielst (132), Vienna, Austria Jul 19, 2009 A brown colour with a red hue and a rapidly disappearing head. Dark fruity liquorice aroma with honey and a bit of booze and tobacco. Crisp carbonation, a milky coffee-like flavour and a lovely, nutty roastiness. A medium sweetness leaves a slightly sticky mouthfeel, the body is medium to full. Once the carbonation decreases, the mouthfeel becomes smoother and creamier - definitely better without the crispness. This is without a doubt nice, just a bit too slick and clean, meaning it lacks exciting flavours. bubbleflubber (885), Collinsville, Virginia, USA Jul 10, 2009 Deep mahogany pour into the glass, with a minimal offwhite head that leaves a fizzy ring and lace. The nose has banana and yeast notes (almost like a German hefe), with some sweet caramel in there, too. The flavors have some dark esters, lots of sweet malt, some Karo syrup and vanilla extract between the mid- and back-palates, a hint of plantain and some aerated sugars. ABV is integrated very well, with just a hint of warmth lingering on the mid-palate after the pull. Malty finish, semi-dry with a round mouthfeel and semi-lively carbo levels. A very decent doppelbock.
