Rastacouere (5551), Montréal, Quebec, Canada Jan 3, 2005 Clear burgundy flashed dark brown Smallish deep beige head. Dry malt aroma comprises unbalanced leathery nuttiness that vainly attempts to push away vegetal component, at times soy sauce like, at others, almost like a piece of rubber. Uselessly salty and lightly tart on the tongue. The malt doesn’t develop any firmness and instead wanders into vegetal oil ground, earthy at that and somehow woody, but never seizing the reins of anything concertely uniform. Mouthfeel is thin and oily despite moderately high carbonation. Disappointing really. wunderbier (1264), Tampere, Finland Dec 13, 2004 16 oz bottle, goblet. Molasses, caramel, chocolate, toasted malt (H); light alcohol, banana, clove, plum, prune, cassis, red wine, brown sugar aromas. Average, creamy/frothy, off-white head sits on a light brown beer. Heavily sweet flavor becomes a moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter finish. Medium body, watery/oily texture, soft carbonation. The bottom line is: would have liked more chocolate aroma/flavor and a creamy texture. dortmunder (961), Herdecke, Germany Dec 7, 2004 Dark reddish black/brown colour. Huge, lasting foamy head. Caramelly, heaviiy malty nose. Malty, caramelly, nutty taste with a slightly bitter finish. Mediumbodied. Ratherstandard, a bit one-dimensional Doppelbock, though still okay with me. 5000 (2409), Hardened Liver, Washington, USA Dec 7, 2004 Bottle pours brown, black cherry tones, large fluffy off-white head, attractive lacing, with light carbonation. Sweet aroma, malts, minor dark pitted fruit, and light alcohol. Bready flavor, subtle malts, but not much else going on. Certainly smelled more entertaining. Decent body, medium mouthfeel. Finishes somewhat quick & light, some alcohol warming, with lingering bready/malty flavors. Shallow background of dark pitted fruits, but not enough to come out and say hello.   Not bad, but fairly average.
wulfhere (217), Billings, Montana, USA Dec 6, 2004 Very deep copper to opaque brown with a decent head that receded rapidly to just a bit of tan lace around the edge of the glass. Rich, malty nose with caramel, chocolate and mild roasted character and a definite alcoholic scent. Maybe just a bit of astringency and a slight phenolic background, but very malty and rich! Mouthfeel is full and finish is middlin’ sweet.
Braudog (3733), Dayton, Ohio, USA Nov 30, 2004 Shiny auburn color with big head between white and tan. Sugary sweet aroma. Smooth on the tongue, with a mellow sweet start, settling into a tart roasted grape flavor. Only for the hearty beer drinkers. atpayne (615), Zionsville, Indiana, USA Nov 27, 2004 Not quite solid brown and amber with a creamy tan head. It has a smokey and roasted malt aroma with some carmel sweetness and a bit of a dark fruit side. The flaovr is full and smooth. Sweet, with molasses and malt and some chocolate finishing warm and smooth. mike mcneil (660), St Augustine, Florida, USA Oct 31, 2004 Deep brown with burgundy highlights. Initial fluffy tan head, but thins quickly to just a few small whisps. Aroma of dark fruits, molasses and malt are quite prominent. Palate is a bit on the thin, watery side; but does present a fairly tasty malty bock flavor reminiscient of the aroma. Finish fades in a flash. Some warming alcohol noticed which was welcomed. Overall, a bit of a lighweight dopplebock.
