imdownthepub (3960), Banbury, Oxfordshire, Oxfordshire, England Dec 16, 2007 Bottle Conditioned, 500ml. From Asda, Leamington Spa. Cloudy orange amber with no head. Disappointingly low flavoured wheat beer, few of the spicy or lemony flavours to be had. There is a banana note with boiled sweet and yeastiness. Earthy, cereal finish. leaparsons (3802), Leicester, Leicestershire, England Aug 17, 2007 Bottle. Hazy orange yellow with a small head. Aromas are yeasty with citrus. Some caramel with sour notes following. Flavours are sharp citrus and vinegar with a dry finish. Somehow still OK. DruncanVeasey (1533), Burbage, Croatia Jun 16, 2007 Bottled. (Sampled as ’Jean Cloudy Van Damme’ Belgian Style Wheat beer, 5%.) Authentic murk, but little carbonation and a head that recedes to a slick in seconds. Nose of orange, chocolate, vinegar, wet earth. Flavour-wise, this isn’t ticking the right boxes at all. Musty and overly malty, with no discernible citrus, sharpness or spice. Finishes with a disturbing, slightly smoky malt peatiness completely inappropriate to the style. Bonus points for taking the style on, but a bit of an ordeal. StueyD (590), King’s Lynn, Norfolk, Norfolk, England May 23, 2007 A pale, yellow, cloudy beer with a thick white head. A distinctive fruity nose, citrusy to start, with grapefruit and orange, then an odd, strawberry jam-like aroma, that is hard to miss! The taste starts off promising, dry, wheaty, then citrusy, grapefruit and orange again, plus a little spiciness appears too, but then that strawberry jam element comes through from the aroma, and is extremely off-putting! (Cask - 2007 Cambridge Beer Festival hughie (2059), Bedford, Bedfordshire, England Mar 26, 2007 Pale gold with a white head. Slightly hazy. Aroma is hard to define: I picked out pineapple and chocolate, not a very promising combination. Slightly citric taste with lots of carbonation and some bitterness. It’s a brave attempt at the style, but it seems that several of the required elements are missing.
