SpudClampDawg (898), Jasper, Indiana, USA Apr 23, 2005 Pours like a porter. Lots of refined sugar and roastiness in the body. A bit watery for my tastes, but very drinkable and quite refreshing. Lubiere (3144), Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Aug 29, 2004 (draft- Indiana brewers fest)...called here Main Street chocolate rye brown...not sure if this is the same. Dark brown ale with Pleasant hops and perfumy aroma. Interesting melding of nutty malt and hops with a grape finish. Rich bodied. cb (810), Wheat Ridge, Colorado, USA Feb 11, 2004 Wonderful toasted malt, chocolate and rye aroma. Thin palate, yet the rye was tastily evident. Became increasingly watery as warmed. Hazelnut flavors were evident and then disapppeared, seeming to alternate with the flat, woody grains. Drink cold. TAR (1995), Boulder Co., Colorado, USA Feb 5, 2004 Draft: Clear plum. Dense, broken, off-white foam. Firm woody malt aroma coupled with light chalkiness and leafy hops. Moderately airy with hints of charred sugars, mineral, cotton, and hazelnut. Soft carbonation. Slick body. Very thin despite the sizeable malt girth. Light acidity immediately greets the palate as the simplistic leafy hop notes follow suit. Woody malts continue to slice their way through the charred sugars and spicy underlying yeast flavors. Subdued chocolate and plum interplay. Woody malts are held in check by delicate dark fruit flavors at the finish along with a dab of coffee, cane sugar, and hazelnut. This badly needs some spicy hops and a heftier body to richen the sugary, woody malt tones. Not bad.
