bhensonb (2832), Woodland, California, USA Jul 19, 2006 Chocolate malty aroma. Tan head quickly disipated. A really dark brown color. No hints of red or gold using a halogen lamp. It’s sweet. Finishes with a chocolate hint. It’s not cloying, but it’s sweet. I had the Hogsback Brown some years ago, and I don’t think it was this sweet. Not unpleasant, a bit reminiscent of Horlicks chocolate tabs. Finishes that way. It’s got other things, but they are background. A little coffee, maybe a bit of prune. All ok. Just kind of unique. Tends to flatten out after awhile. BückDich (4525), Boise, Idaho, USA Mar 23, 2006 Bottle: Dark brown ruby, thin head. Nose of sweet roasty notes and plum fruity things. The flavor is creamy with lots of nutty and smooth notes. Very nice brown ale but it is borderline a power. Chewy, smoky, werchestershire and some sherry. DarkElf (2627), La Jolla, California, USA Dec 7, 2005 (12 oz bottle: Holiday Wine Cellar in Escondido, CA) Yet another generic brown ale, which for me isn’t a very interesting or challenging beer, but it’s pleasant tasting and easy drinking. It pours with a small light tan head that quickly fizzes away to nothing, and I mean nothing. Since the body is a dark ruddy brown, and there are almost no carbonation bubbles rising through the beer, this ends up looking like a glass of flat Coca-Cola. The flavor is mostly sweet and sugary, malty, slightly bready, somewhat toasty, very gently roasty. In the nose, I’m picking up dark and toasty malts, caramel, molasses. Medium bodied, kinda sorta. I guess I’m just less than impressed by this because it’s getting dangerously close to sugar water. It’s an okay beer, but it’s lacking any character and with so many better brown ales on the market, it’s not something I’ll buy again. littlewhootsie (1), USA does not count Dec 1, 2005 This is a lovely beer. i had absolutely NO problem in drinking it--it poured from its 12 oz bottle into a pint w/a nice foamy head that soon flattened. i loved the nice dark colour. the overall taste was slightly carbonated and reminded me of a blend of Guinness, a "Red" w/some Fat Tire thrown in for good measure. In drinking, it went down very smooth and left a somewhat bitter aftertaste that didn’t leave me wretching like some can. Very Nice. i love it. jazz88 (2202), San Francisco, California, USA Jun 28, 2005 Bottle. A medium to dark brown color with a foamy tan head. A sweet and nutty aroma with a touch of almond and coffee. A light flavor, with toasted malts and a somewhat off finish.
