COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Unlike traditional straw-colored, low gravity Saisons, Black Swan was darkened with special Belgian and German malts and strengthened to 7.7% ABV with natural brown sugars. Roasted malt and molasses mingle on the tongue with fragrant farmhouse esters for a bold, rich and smooth flavor. Esteemed Boulder artist Phil Lewis designed the piece featured on Black Swan’s label and has documented the entire creation process on his blog. The Artisan Ale Project is Twisted Pine’s year-long celebration of the artistic creativity which makes Colorado unique. Each month in 2012, a different beer is labeled with work by an inspired local artist and a distinctive new beer is born.

On tap aTwisted Pine poured a clear dark redish brown with a lasting creamy tan head. Aromas of roastiness, yeast, fruittiness, spice and light toffe. Palate was medium bodied and smoth. Flavors of roastiness, yeast cocoa, light spice and light fruitines with a smooth lingering roasty yeasty finish.

UPDATED: JAN 2, 2013 Heavy dark brown with a lasting thin beige head. Nice aroma of toast, caramel, roastiness, and bready yeast with just a hint of citrus and pear. Nice full body with a light yet spritzy carbonation. Flavors of roastiness and earthy caramel start the flavor with some dates, citrus peel, doughy yeast, and burnt toast. Finishes nice and yeast-estery dry, with a gentle touch of black licorice.

Pour out of 750 mL bottle, dark brownish black with thin white head, aroma brought notes of nice dark fruits, white fruits with some peach, pear, nice slightly funky note with hints of dark roasted malts, touch of earth, caramel. Taste is a nice mix of dark fruits with dark roasted malts, some caramel mixing into peach and pear notes, slight orange peel, hints of earth and funky notes, finishing fairly bitter and dry.

Bottle. Pours clear dark brown with a medium, frothy light tan head, medium retention with good lacing. Aroma is light chocolate malt with toast notes, Belgian yeast esters and spices with dark fruity esters. Flavor is malt dominant with medium hops and bitterness, spices and fruity esters with a dry finish. Medium body and carbonation.

Tap @ Twisted Pine. A bit hazy, orangish brown appearance with a cream colored head. Dull chocolate, caramel, lightly fruity, vanilla aroma. Low carbonation. Burnt caramel malty, moderate cocoa, light estery/fruity, vanilla, char flavor. Tangy, a bit boozy finish. Pass.
