COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A Buffalo Trace Bourbon Barrel Aged Sweet Stout. Developed for the Artisan Ale Project, Artisan ales will come in sleek, black 750ml glass bottles and will mark the brewery’s first foray into that size packaging. Quantities will be limited, especially for the barrel-aged beers in the series. Distribution of the bottles will be restricted to Colorado accounts and the Twisted Pine ale house will have each new beer on tap for as long as supplies last. January’s lead-off entry is an American cream-style stout aged in bourbon barrels. The beer, known as Surreal Stout, will feature artwork by Allison Boozer of Denver.

750 ml bottle courtesy of Doodler (thanks Scott) poured a clear dark reddish brown nearly black with a lasting brown head. Aromas of roated malt, oak, vanilla, milk chocolate, carmel and bourbon. Palate was meium bodied and smooth with a watery finish. Flavors of dark chocolate, roastiness, vanilla, light carmel and light bourbon with a smooth watery lingering bourbon finish.

Pours a viscous inky black with one finger or dark tan head. Some light comes through on the edges. Nose is rich with soft chocolate notes and hints of wood. Lots of acidity and dark coffee in the nose, kind of slick. Very very very slight barrel character. Shows some age. Mellow flavor, too much acidity by a long shot. Cuts the body way down. Kind of has the cold coffee thing going on. Slick in the mouth with a medium body and light carbonation. Nothing special here.

Bottle shared by Bacterial! Dark brown pour, medium lasting carbonation and an aroma of chocolate and a hint of bourbon. Flavor is a nice meld of coffee, bourbon, chocolate and nuts. Interesting BA stout, worth the time to seek out.

Bottle thanks to Craig. Pours a rich dark brown color with a medium tan head. The aroma was rich cocoa and roast, something almost akin to tartness I guess it is the barrel. The flavor is very good and mellow; roasty, rich milk, chocolate, cocoa, a bit of heavier roast but mostly mellow and sweet. Not much barrel here, maybe a bit of roundness.

Aroma - dark fruits with vanilla and a hint of bourbon Appearance - dark, thin pour with fast disappearing tan head Taste - Sweet with cocoa and light bourbon initially Palate - not a heavy, sticky sweet stout, but overall a complex crisp stout Overall - For Twisted Pine, this is one of their better brews I have tried. I have been usually let down by this brewer, but with this beer and series, I think they are going to make the next big step into the craft beer world.

750ml black wax capped bottle. Dropped by in Boulder to pick this one up. De-waxing was a bit of a mess, but once opened, pours a pitch black and has a big bourbon nose and vanilla aroma. Told this is a blend of three various years of stouts blended into one. Taste is rich malts, cocoa nibs and caramel with loads of bourbon throughout. Somewhat thinner for a sweet stout, but a pretty easy drinker. Still a little heat working, finishes with a sugary caramel and roasted coffee note.
