Dnish pour @ VA Wine Experience tasting. Basic hoppy black ale. Grassy hops, roasted malts. Nothing spectacular, but easy drinking, inoffensive. Wouldn’t be my first choice for the style.

22 oz. bottle. Pours black with a tan head. Aromas of roasted malts, citrus and tropical fruit. Flavors are almost like a stout mixed with an IPA. Thick mouth feel, good balance and a smooth hoppy finish.

22oz bottle: Pours a mostly opaque black with dark mahogany edges and a large, clumpy-lacing froth of light tan head. Has a semi-sweet toasted dark caramel malty nose with a hint of light roast and plenty of earthy resiny hops. Body starts with pretty good fullness and lively carbonation with mild sweetness, quickly giving way to a more bitter resiny hop flavor with a hint of acetone. Finishes dry with some lingering bitterness. Pretty true to style, but could be a little cleaner.

Bottle. Black pour with a foamy tan head. Floral and pine notes atop roasted malt and chocolate. Taste is roasted malt blended with pine, citrus notes and floral hops. Some coffee intrudes as does dark chocolate notes. Body is medium with a smooth, creamy carbonation. Light lingering bitterness. Ends with more roasted malt, coffee notes, pine, citrus and dark chocolate. Tasty!
3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 marcus (5104) - Sacramento, California, USA - MAY 11, 2013
Bottle from Total Wine, Sacramento. Pours black with a rich tan head and a chocolate and pine aroma. There is a full-bodied roasted malt flavor with lots of hop bitterness and a powder dry finish. So far it sounds like this beer should be delicious, but it just doesn’t taste that good. Maybe too many IBUs for such a smoky sweet malt as carafa.
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 Steve_0 (1395) - Denver, Colorado, USA - MAY 10, 2013
On tap at Wynkoop. Pour is deep brown with a slight red hue and small brown head. Piney, roasty, lightly chocolatey, grassy, bready, and sappy aroma. Taste is dark chocolate, big pine and roast, grass, light coffee - somewhat watered down - and grapefruit peel with a big bitter finish. Light body with high carbonation. Not bad.
3.5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20 obguthr (3234) - Poquoson, Virginia, USA - APR 4, 2013
Earthy aroma of clay, mud, peat, and smoke with pine and coffee accents. Clear ruby brown, enormous tan head, abundant lacing. Intense pine and charcoal on the palate. Cabbage is present. Has nice attributes, but in the end I just didn’t enjoy it very much.
3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Tide (787) - Espoo, FINLAND - MAR 26, 2013
Draught at bar. Dark brown color, white head. Bitter taste with citrus, roasted malts, floral hops, fruits and coffee. Nicely balanced body with hops and roasted malts. Bitter sweet finish with roasted malts. Excellent black IPA.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 bubbleflubber (1465) - Asheville, North Carolina, USA - MAR 23, 2013
Pours the deepest mahogany into the glass, not quite opaque, but with ruby fringes. The ice cream thick tan head shows really nicely as a cap down the glass, which leaves thick lacing. The nose is definitely malty with a hint of wood and earth. Flavors are dry, roasted and malty, with fresh pine needle accents and a resiny bitter finish. The palate is creamy and smooth with a nicely integrated active mouthfeel, medium-bodied. The roasts and bitters come forth strongly; however, I wish there were a bit more sweetness to balance the brew a little. Not bad.
