4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Jet black with a finely beaded tan head. Aroma of roast malt and floral hops. Firm hop bitterness, rich burnt carmel and espresso flavors, followed by more bittters, this time from the dark malts. Big, tasty, and well integrated flavors. Really nice.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle. Pours an almost-black color with very little head. Floral hoppy notes hit you right off the bat. Smack in the face. Taste has some great floral and citrus notes. Balanced well without being too hoppy.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle: What a great Black IPA / India Black Ale / Cascadian Dark -- or whatever you care to call it. Clear and deep chestnut brown. Lightish, easy-to-drink texture. Massive blast of spicy hops from the beginning to end. Big, lasting notes of pine, grapefruit, oranges and grass. Aromatic, wildflower-like aromas. Perfect amount of bitterness along with a mild sweetness. Woodsy malts take the backseat to the hops, as they should, and they provide a nice platform for the hops. And right in the finish, thereís an awesome sweet flavor that I canít put my finger on. Overall, I was really impressed with this IBA.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle. Pours a thick, dense onyx with a lingering head of beige that clings nicely to the glass. Nose is light mango with grapefruit and rose. Flavor is hoppy pine sap offset by a delicate sourdough and rose. Oily on the tongue. Wow; VERY tasty. Definite repeat. Love the pine backbone.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
The pour is a clear, dark garnet color with a fairly small, beige, pillowy head which is somewhat lasting and leaves a bit of drippy lace rings. The nose is nice with lots of honeyed breads, some Colombian roast coffee, resins, floral, some tangerine, and dark chocolate. The flavor is similar with more tangerine, floral and resins, similar coffee, more bread crusts, toasted caramel, and dark chocolates. The palate is thin, watery, oily, medium, and lively. The finish is mostly hoppy with tangerine almost turning ruby red grapefruit-like, still the resins, dark chocolate, and the same Colombian coffee. Similar to Anderson Valley Hop Ottin IPA with the honeyed malts and crisp clean hop notes. However, the dark chocolates and coffee notes added to the bitterness to make for something unique. Not something I would consider a black IPA, but certainly a unique beer somewhere between a standard IPA and a Black IPA; but I guess with this style just emerging, new intricacies are bound to emerge. I am surprised by the very low ratings; this was by no means great, but certainly more worthy than the scores it has received.

3.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours a respectable black with a touch of ruby in it. Aroma is amazing... dark chocolate, some espresso and a touch of smoke rounds out the awesome nose. Somewhere though, there is a bit of sweet orange notes playing in the nose. Clean flavor of citrus and pine followed by dark roasted malt and smokey cocoa. Overall, this was really pleasurable to drink.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle. Pours clear black with a large, frothy and fizzy tan head, long retention with good lacing. Aroma is spicy alcohol, roast and dark chocolate malt, earthy, pine, spruce, and grapefruit hops with plum and currant notes. Flavor is heavy hops and bitterness, supporting dark roasted malt and fruits with a dry finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: NOV 3, 2010 Bomber. Pours black with a foamy 2 finger tan head. Aromas of earth and pine - probably citrus though. Full bodied with foamy carbonation. Flavor is smooth dark burnt malt with a lot of hop that comes out like pine at first then morphs to grapefruit rind. Drinking this pretty warm, and thereís earthy stuff apparent. Hop coats the mouth. Not a huge beer, but a very tasty and interesting beer. And pretty hoppy. Sure itís bitter, but not harshly so. At least not to the NW level. (rerating to get my numbers in; thanks Beaver)
