The biggest of stouts, Russian Imperials were born out of the cold north and the Russian court’s desire for rich, dark brews. Ours is a deep, multilayered one. Aged in brandy barrels for six months on cherries, vanilla and cacao nibs, a smooth body carries immense flavors of coffee, chocolate, cherries and barrel-aged complexity.

Pours an oily black with a finger of caramel colored head. Aroma is rich with dark fruit amidst chocolate and a subtle twist of brandy oak to round it out. Taste is more of the same, with a strong presence at the beginning from the cherries, which mellows out into chocolate, vanilla, oak, and brandy. Palate is surprising light for such a monster of a beer, but I enjoyed the smoothness to balance such an intense beer. Overall this beer was incredibly unique and enjoyable and I look forward to enjoying another bottle a year from now.

UPDATED: APR 3, 2015 Bottle thanks to Lizzie! Pours black with a creamy tan head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma is full of brandy and vanilla with a bit of cherry, dark grains and some toffee. Flavor has tons of brandy and butterscotch with some cherry and a bit of biscuit as well as bitter chocolate. A bit off.

Schooner at brewery. Brown head sticks around. Aroma has a cocoa aspect and fortunately not sweet or boozy. There is an herbal licorice aspect and an light astringent roasted character. Mouthfeel starts off thick and ends lighter with some sparkling carbonation. In the flavor, I am again happy with low sweet and alcohol. A good cocoa fumy flavor. Again an astringent roasted malt attenuating my enjoyment.

Jet black, thin creamy white head. Sugary diacetyl nose, stinging and sweet. Flavor is heavy marshmallow, stinging across mid, thin chocolate aging with heat through the sweet, gritty end.

Wow, just wow. Black pour with an amazing mocha head. Aroma of molasses, vanilla, slight brandy and generic stout notes. Taste is sooo decadent. Slight chocolate, slight coffee, molasses, big yet integrated vanilla, and an amazing vinous sweet brandy presence. It coats everything else and brings it all together. Mouthfeel is just a tad thin, but still works wonderfully. Simply amazing. Thanks to MikedR for this one.
