4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 fear025 (213) - Illinois, USA - MAY 22, 2011
Aroma:There’s a little bit of balsamic vinegar along with other sour aromas. I also get some apple and grape skin. It’s got a lot of complexity for a sour beer.
Appearance:Honey colored, low amount of head that quickly dissipates. Good lacing.
Taste:Great mild sour flavors on the foretaste of this beer. I taste grapeskin, red currant, rhubarb, apple or kumquat. This beer is a little strange for me because it actually gets more sour the more I drink. Also, depending on where it hits your tongue, some sweet apple flavors shine through more. The aftertaste has a strong nutty flavor, which is also odd in a sour beer.
Palate:The body on this beer is light to medium. It has some harsh astringency throughout, peaking on the aftertaste in the back of my throat.
Overall:Overall this is a wonderful easy-drinking sour beer with a lot of complexity. The mildness of it’s sour flavors really lets the base beer grains show through as well.

375 ml bottle into tulip, no bottle date, but picked this up when it was released in 2011. Pours slightly hazy pale orange color with a nice 1-2 finger dense off white head with good retention that reduces to a thin cap. Spotty lacing on the glass, and a good amount of carbonation streaming up. Aromas of big tart apple, cherry, cider vinegar, spiciness, hay, grape, lemon, oak, and funk. Very nice aromas with great balance of everything. Nothing is too overpowering. Taste of big tart apple, cherry, grape, lemon, pear, spiciness, grass, earthiness, light vinegar, and oak. Nice tart and sour finish; with some lingering notes of apple, grape, vinegar, spiciness, and earthiness. Very nice balance of sweetness with the acidity. Medium carbonation and body; with a nice crisp and acidic mouthfeel. No alcohol noticed at all as expected from the style. Overall this is an outstanding and well balanced American wild ale. Very complex and smooth drinking despite the acidity.

Served at a beer dinner. Hazy, orange-amber with a thin, frothy, white head that lingers and leaves light lace. Aroma is funky and sour with noticeable Brett, light vinegar, and citrus. Notes of oak, tart apple, grapefruit, and grass. Malt begins to come through after the initial sour wallop. Flavor is very tart up front noticeable Brett and lots of grapefruit, lemon, and apple peel. Clean malt with a hint of oak becomes more noticeable as the flavor progresses. Finishes lightly dry, tart, and funky, with lots of citrus and apple peel. Body is medium-light, with moderate carbonation. A great sour that makes my mouth water for the next sip.

Bottle poured into a snifter. Pours a clear gold with about a half finger of white head. Aroma is quite sour with apple cider and a hint of oaky vanilla. Taste is about the same with more citrus and a decent bit of funk. Overall, I’m digging this beer. I would gladly drink this again anytime.

UPDATED: AUG 20, 2012 poured from a bottle into a snifter. Pours a light golden color with a 1" head.
Very funky and complex with aromas of bruised apples, pears, funky aromas and some spice with a bit of tart citrus aromas as well.
really good feel and medium bodied with a good amount of sour apple and funk flavors.
this was a lot more funky than I remembered it to be. if I didn’t see this, I’d actually thought it was a flemish red. This is a real quality sour and another real great job from two brothers.

Thanks to lurchingbeast for sending this to me recently.
Pours a dark golden orange/copper color with a one finger white foam head that quickly settles into a thick lasting ring. Sporadic spots of lacing left behind.
Slightly funky aroma with lots of earthy oak and barnyard character. Vinous with some lactic funk, acetic vinegar and tart dark fruits. Hints of grape, dark cherry, etc.
Medium bodied with a tart, dry/funky presence that lingers over the sweeter vinous notes into a tart dry finish. Puckering and sour without being harsh or acidic. Lots of earthy oak and dry musty funk up front with brett and other bugs. This is countered by the sweet vinous fruit notes, mostly dark cherry, grape and plun. lingering acetic vinegar presence that makes me thirst for more. Well balanced and pretty sour/funky without being overdone. Pretty complex and easy to drink.

Amber with thin white head. Nose of sour apples, oak, and honey. Medium body with lots of carbonation. Flavors of sour apple and pear. Somewhat musty with fresh baked bread. Sort-of one dimensional, but very enjoyable. Nice work.
