COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
For those that do not know this beer (which is probably most people), this was the second beer we ever made. The Dark Mild Ale never had a real name nor did it even get packaged in a bottle. Back in 1997 when we stopped producing it we did not own a bottling line yet. This dark sessionable ale was a favorite of the brewers, however not understood in craft beer’s infancy 15 years ago. We think now craft drinkers will get it.

Pint draft at Local 22 during CCBW (still a hotel bar-priced $8). Light brown color, lots of light shining through. Poured from one of those newfangled taps where the nozzle is at the bottom of the glass to prevent foam from coming up. Sigh, at least it’s not a frozen glass (though I spotted a freezer for them behind the bar). Result is a thin, nitro type head. A get a brown malt nose, very much like a Newcastle. Despite looking pretty well filtered, there’s still a taste of yeast in there. Does fit in the the English Mild style, with its thin carbonation and Fuggles type hops around brown roast malt. Should be very easy drinking, but those malts offer a bit of chewiness that must be considered.

From the bomber this poured a clear reddish chestnut body with some tan bubbles and a film, never a head. The aroma had a woody maltiness with the accompanying damp dankness. The flavor had a touch of dark maltose sweetness with some wet cigar and dried wood. Dry finish. Not bad.

bottle - Pours lightly hazy amber and has a grainy aroma that put me in mind of oatmeal. The flavor is sweet and earthy with some mild bitterness. It’s medium bodied with an earthy, lightly bitter finish. It’s okay.

Reddish amber beer with a foamy beige head. Wet grain and ripe fruit nose. Sweet/tart flavor with some wet grains and old lemon rind. Odd flavor.

This bottled brew from a bottle shop poured a head of all foam fine to medium sized white colored bubbles that were mostly diminishing and left behind a uncarbonated slightly hazy brown colored body and a fair lacing. The mild aroma was brown malt and musty. The mouth feel was tingly at the start and at the finish. The good flavor contained notes of mild ale honey and malt. An OK brew just nothing special.

Pours a clear light brown with an enormous billowing off white head. Aromas of toffee, some roast. Taste is bitter, slightly dry, roasted nuts and some caramel. Pretty fucking good tasting for its low ABV.

22oz bomber poured into a shaker. Pours a dark nut brown with a finger of beige gead. Aroma is very light. Toffee with some spices and bready yeast. Taste is light sweet. Toffee and spice with bread and somthhing slightly tart. Light bodied with a thin and smooth texture. Fizzy carbonation abd a long finish. Overall, not bad. A little fruity but im wondering if this may be infected with brett also. Oh well, im digging it.

Clear dark copper to chestnut pour with a tall, chunky beige head. Aroma of toffee, nuts, floral and planty hops, caramel, light nutty notes, odd planty tartness and slightly unpleasant metallic notes. Flavor starts out fruity and toasty, dark caramel, a nice tart balsamic-like acidity, toffee, hints of caramel, sweet tree fruit, light smokiness and light woody notes. Light, slightly slick and dry body with a moderate carbonation. Pretty damn tasty, it reminds me of New Glarus Unplugged Old English Porter, which I loved.

22oz bottle in a shaker. Pours copper/brown with a light tan head. Aroma of lightly roasted malts, some caramel, a fruity/tartness to it, and some hops. Flavor the same. Average texture. This might be a bad bottle, or it might be a style of beer not for me.

Bottle. Lactic chocolate malt aroma. Clear brown with moderate tan head. Tart lactic acid and light chocolate malt flavor. Decent body. Not bad - more tart than the typical mild ale.

On tap at Fountainhead in Chicago, IL. Poured pretty dark, but it was dark inside so I can’t really judge the color. Pretty sweet and smooth, though there was a bit of bubbly carbonated finish. A little bit of caramel and molasses in it.
