UPDATED: FEB 26, 2006 New rating, 2/26/06. Got a fresher bottle this time (best by 1/30/06), so letís recheck this pup: I can see I was seduced then by malts that get concentrated with age. This one pours a darker gold color, and a bit more haze than in most American iterations of a weizen. Big banana nose at pour, but not much in the glass, just a sprightly wheat character under a fluffy, short-lived head, poured into a 12-oz. weizen glass. Banana comes back in the taste, with mild notes of clove, and a touch of bubble-gum and vanilla. Not quite the heady feeling I get when drinking a properly-presented Hacker-Pschorr, but I think real Hefeweizen fans will enjoy it. <hr>Original rating, 9/28/03: 7-3-7-4-15
Another 3-year-old bottle from my stash, so this is a review of how well it ages, which a weiss is not meant to do.
A slight flowery nose when opened, then pours a dark weiss color, with a little less than standard haziness. The spicy flavor has subsided, leaving the malt to deepen to an almost syrupy richness. Hop flavor is subtle, more to make the alcohol feel a little warmer. Taste is well out of the style profile, but ages to a fine beer nonetheless.

Bottle @ Jungle Jims / Eastgate OH --- Hazy light orange amber, white head cover, light lace streaks. Taste is malt and wheat that move through a solid carbonated swallow, adding caramel toffee and light bittering in a medium length finish. A very appealing Weiss - recommended.

12oz bottle. Orange-tan body, slightly hazy. Thin white head. Really clean, fresh weizen. Everything is balanced well. Solid dry bitterness, clean malt bill, mellow wheat banana. Solid offering.

Not bad but not too Weizen. Nice to drink, cloudy and good smell. Refreshing and great features..

Cloudy gold pour. White head diminishes quickly and leaves spotty lacing. Typical hefe nose-- banana bread. Faint floral hops. Medium body. Lots of banana and spices, bit of floral hops in the finish. Clean and no overpowering flavors. Not my favorite style, but enjoyable.

Bottle. Cloudy honey-orange with an expansive fluffy head of white. Aroma blends clove, banana, vanilla and orange, with an emphasis on the fruits. The flavor is soft and sweet, with mild fruity wheat fading to vanilla and mild banana before a gentle tang at the finish. Creamy medium body; moderate pinching carbonation. Nothing out of the ordinary here.

Deep honey color with no head. Sweet thick fruity aroma. Flavor is champagne like, a bit heavy. Too heavy for me. Tastes like wheat wine. Sticky and thick.

Draft at warrenville. Huge banana aroma with light bubblegum and clove. Taste is less yeast forward. More of a creamy wheat flavor and a silky mouthfeel. Not much banana in the flavor but overall a decent beer.

12oz bottle. 8/23/15 code date. Appearance: Cloudy light golden, with minimal white head, especially for style. Aroma: Banana is strong, with some clove as well. Typical weizen yeast. Taste: Sweet, grainy maltiness, with a hint of banana and strong clove. Bitterness is minimal. Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a slight creaminess and slickness in the tongue. Carbonation is low for the style. Finish: Banane esters and clove phenols linger retro nasally long after the swallow. Overall: Great weizen yeast character. This serving is under carbonated for the style, but well wishing code date on bottle. Tastes good but a bit overly sweet, almost cloying

The beer pours a cloudy golden color with a large white head that fades somewhat quickly. The aroma has a lot of banana, but there is also some wheat sweetness and vanilla. The taste is quite sweet and a touch sour with a strong banana flavor supported by wheat graininess. The palate has an average carbonation, which should feel pleasant on the tongue, but the thin texture and medium-light body donít support that carbonation bite on the tongue.

12 oz bottle, poured into a tulip glass at approximately 40 degrees F. Appearance: Pours a bright and sunny straw gold, mildly cloudy beneath a fluffy white head. Smell: Fruit and spice drifting above a ripe wheat field, redolent with notes of banana and clove. This is one of the first US "hefeweizens" Iíve smelled that has given me hope that Iím actually about to taste a traditional hefe. Taste: Tradition confirmed. This beer billows with banana and bubblegum esters, atop a tastefully understated mix of clove and coriander. While nothing particularly stands out, thatís not exactly a bad thing - this actually drinks like a hefeweizen. Mouthfeel: Light while bordering on creamy, this is a quaffable brew! Overall: I am quite pleased to have found another US version of a hefeweizen that is not a pale wheat ale with a misleading title. Will definitely repeat.
