Heavier Handed is one of a series of special limited-run beers in the styles that are more extreme or unusual. This Artisan Beer is in celebration of our new French oak tanks, called "Foudres". Tons of fresh, wet hops from Washington State power through this stepped up version of our seasonal IPA.

Found some old notes from a visit to 69 Taps in Medina. Mahogany pour with a yellowish tan head. The aroma is more fruity than hoppy. The beer is med-light bodied. The hop is not over powering the bitterness is lower than expected. The maltss are sweet and well matched to the hops. The finish is sharp and smooth. Very nice IPA!

Courtesy Solan. Big copper pour. Malty body, lots of hop bitterness. Huge pine citrus hop aroma. Great for the lover of hops.

Bottle: Copper pour with good clarity and a tan film of head. Very sweet- both caramel malts and big vanilla from the oak- but no dry wood character. Slick sugary body. Some sweet chewy vegetal/syrupy hops with twiggy notes underneath thick caramel and vanilla sweetness. Too much residual sugar and lacking balance.

Bottle. Pours a clear orange with a small white head. Aroma of piney hops, sweet citrus, tropical fruits, and caramel malt. Flavor of caramel malt initially with light citrus hops in the finish. Pretty good IIPA with strong malt overtones. 7/4/7/4/15 [3.7/5]

Bottle and served in my GI IPA tulip: Pours an initial clean coppery hue with a lovely rocky and creamy slightly off-white head which left excellent lacework upon the glass work. The aroma show plenty of resiny dry-hopping which is an absolute requirement for an BA aged DIPA if you ask me. There is also plenty of caramel and bready malts, clove, white pepper, mint , clean oak and mineral water. The taste is much more towards the malt character but there is a classic English dry bitterness to be had. Light amounts of pepper, clove, grapefruit and mango before the tannic oak and astringent bitters comes about to drain the palate of lingering sweetness. There is also an appearing leafy and catty character that gets stronger as it warms. The mouth feel has been thinned out by the barrel (yet another reason that most IPA/DIPA do not take well to barrel aging), chalky, woody dry and mineral aspects kill the wow factor sadly.

If this was cleaner and brighter, I could see me going ga-ga 4 it. After the nose I thought I was going to rave but this ended up just becoming yet another so-so BA DIPA that makes me wonder if maybe for a moment that those homers on the West Coast are not a little right about Midwestern hoppy brews after all... never mind they are still full of crap. Oh just in case you missed it, this is a Imperial/ Double IPA without a doubt.

UPDATED: DEC 3, 2010 On tap at Bronx Ale House. Not a stellar strong IPA, but a good brew. Rerated in 2010, with similar results. Fresh green hop aroma, with some West Coast hop flavor (Amarillo?). Astringent, but balanced. The rep told me they pay a lot of attention to the oak aging with this one.

UPDATED: FEB 2, 2010 (Rating #5500) Bottle… Hazy amber ale with a mid-sized, creamy, white head. Good retention. The aroma is a bit grainy, but also provides notes of caramel and toffee. Full-bodied with an oily mouthfeel and lively carbonation. The flavor is bursting-at-the-seams with juicy, earthy, hop bitterness. The lengthy finish is bitter, astringent, and then dries out.

Redish orange with a fast disappearing head. Brilliant citrus hop aroma. Slightly sweet with malt in the nose once in the mouth and a nice dry finish.

Poured a hazed glowing orange amber with a decent off-white head. Short lasting. Big sweaty and citrus hop forward aroma with mild woody notes. Hop flavor to start. Pretty dominant but mixes with a sweet malt. Light vanilla underneath. Hop finish outlasts the sweetness but not by much. Some warmth with a medium body. Goes down too easy.
