LinusStick (1830), Moon Twp, suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA May 18, 2008 This was a somewhat disappointing IIPA. Aroma was iced tea and pine. Pour was a thick hazy orange with no head. Taste was very sweet and soapy. Strong caramel malt with a piney hops coming in and out. Sweet malty aftertaste. I’ve had IPAs that are more hoppy than this. jcurtis55 (17), Plainfield, Indiana, USA May 14, 2008 I’m a newcomer to craft beer and this is my first experience with heavy hops. Maybe I should have tried a regular IPA before jumping right to a double IPA. I wanted to check out what hops were all about. From the first sniff, there’s no longer any doubt about what hops smell like. I really had to sip this one and take my time, but it grew on me as I drank it. I would suggest you have someone to share this with since it only comes in a 22oz bottle.
It’s a nice clear orange-copper color. I didn’t get a lot of head, but got long-lasting lacing as the level dropped. The alcohol level was hidden well. I enjoyed the taste as the beer warmed a bit, or maybe my taste buds adjusted after a few swallows. I didn’t really get the bitterness I was expecting but that may be my inexperience with hoppy bear. All in all, I enjoyed my first experience with a double IPA. JCB (1713), Durham, North Carolina, USA May 13, 2008 22oz from Warehouse Beverage, Cleveland Heights. Nice looking pour, deep orange with a large fluffy head, Dreadnaught or Dorado style. The aroma isn’t so citrus-y or resinous, but is more sweet and floral than I’d expected. I even thought of Lifesavers candy somehow. Nice creamy palate that suits the sweet malts quite well, but I guess I was wanting more tang, bite, and aggression. Still, a good beer. pantani (1894), Salinas, California, USA May 9, 2008 Amber with a thin tan head. Aroma is light hops, soap, caramel, and dried fruit. Taste is hoppy with a light soapiness and caramel. IrishBoy (2685), Bakersfield, California, USA May 7, 2008 Bomber from fiver29; Nose of piney and citrus hops and caramel; copper with a medium beige head that laces nicely; flavor is caramelly, slightly sweet with some light hop bitterness; not much of a hop bomb for 100 IBUs. Nice and drinkable though. Acknud (770), Morganfield, Kentucky, USA May 7, 2008 Very refreshing and drinkable. Aroma strong of citrus hops. Slight hazy pour with a 2 finger head. Taste is loaded with citrus. Too bad this is a limited run brew. I would definitely like more of this. KieferUGA (461), Atlanta, Georgia, USA May 3, 2008 22 oz. bottle shared with kleyland. Pours a clear, golden color. Whispy, thin white head. Nice citrus aroma. Body was a bit thin and watery. Flavor is a bit sweet, with sticky hops and some bready malt. Finish is a bit subdued. Nice beer. pintsize (1042), Austin, Texas, USA May 3, 2008 4-11-08 bottle shared with lb4lb thanks to orbitalr0x
Amber orange in color with an ivory white head and little to no lacing. Sweet floral - big floral - hops smell. Big citris hops flavor up front. Very enjoyable and drinkable. Quite refreshing and crisp. The higher alcohol gives this a creamy smooth palate but isnt overwhelmingly boozy. However, as it warms it becomes more present.
