nhorween (487), New York, New York, USA Mar 24, 2008 22 oz bottle. Amber-orange pour with a one finger tan head. Nice balanced hop aroma with a decent sweet, toffee backbone. Alcohol comes through a little but is well hidden in the aroma. Chewy and bitter - quite well balanced but not hugely remarkable. No alcohol comes through in the flavor. Easy to drink. Floral and resiny, with a dry lemon-lime soda type finish.
Beerman6686 (538), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 23, 2008 Poured a nice hazy bright orange color with a big white head. Aroma is of a lot of citrus hops but also pretty sweet and malty. Flavor was much the same, lots of hop flavor, but maybe a bit too sweet and malty for a DIPA. Pigfoot (2222), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Jul 21, 2008 Ruddy peach color, cloudy as heck, nice 1/4" creamy white head..
Juicy, piney, grapefruit, fresh and hoppy, vibrant.
Big, tart bitterness on the palate....caramel malt creeps in, spreads around...citric hops pop up and pucker the place...then all eventually fades back and rounds out...softly departing the tongue.
Taste again, and it’s back, this odd, potent mix of some sour funky stuff and an out-of-whack hop attack...plenty malt balance, but maybe too much for a 100 IBU, 10 % DIPA...I need it fresher, bitterer, maybe a little punishing....that’s what it’s about, man!
Although the alcoholic content does indeed start to creep up, this feels like a very hoppy IPA, but still doesn’t seem enough...at least not enough to match the Stone-like boasting on the label. "Don’t come crying to us if it’s too much for you;t his is for hopheads only!"
Yes, it is, I can concur, but yet it’s not as big as all that, and I know Two Brothers can do better chicagodri (421), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jul 13, 2008 Pours hazy orange. Nice hops aroma. Flavor has a lot more sweet malt than is needed to balance the hops. Some nice pine and grapefruit flavors though. Good, but I don’t know how often I would buy a bottle in the store. mcmd (36), Louisville, Kentucky, USA Jul 9, 2008 Pours hazy copper/orange with a 1 finger off white head. Aroma of sweet malt, caramel, and hops. Flavor is heavy on sweet malt and honeysickle with the hops in the background. Nice medium body with creamy mouthfeel. Not as balanced as I would have liked, a little too sweet. Solid IIPA though. StFun (265), Indiana, USA Jul 7, 2008 Pours a nice orange color, not much in the way of head, but seemingly a lot of carbonation. Pretty hoppy, if watery. Not overly metallica or flowery, just a run of the mill IPA. I would never have guessed it was actually a double IPA if it didn’t say so on the bottle. Perfectly sippable, just lacks any real punch. A totally OK beer, but at this price, I expect more. Bomber for this was was just a couple bucks cheaper than Dreadnaught, so I don’t really see me ever getting this one again.
