Commercial Description:
This deep dark delight harkens back to the days when such brews were shipped to the Imperial Court of Russia. With a firm roasty maltiness balanced against a generous helping of hops, Northwind has what it takes to stand up to the worst its namesake can dish out! Enjoy it by a roaring fire. Formerly called Iditarod Imperial Stout.

Bomber 22 oz bottle Pours a murky brown colour with a medium frothy tan head. Nose coffee, cocoa powder, alcohol, dark fruits and roasted malts. Initial taste of roasted malts, coffee, body is light to medium. Chocolate and mild aluminum lurk in the background. Finishing with a dry warming roasted malt and bitterness. Palate duration is good. Some lacing of the glass and good head retention. Sticky mouthfeel. As the beer warm to about 60F it displayed itself very well from the intial pour.

Had this beer on 10/31/2002. Aroma is a sweet malt scent. Color is a deep deep dark almost black brown. Carbonation is light with a light head. Taste is roasted and crisp. Starting with a medium body it goes down with a crisp feel and a roasted flavor coming on. Finish is clean for a stout, coming on with a nice bright roasted flavor, this is then followed by a slightly sour twang. This is one of the best Stouts I’ve had.

Rating #400. Bottle from West Lakeview Liquors in Chicago. Opaque black color with medium tan quickly dissipating head. Light dark fruit and roast aroma. Very fruity, spicey, only slight dark malt, mild hop presence, chocolate, slight smoke, slight cherry, as it warms it gets very fruity and fruity. Thin body, well carbonated that smooths to a nice creamines (only reason that its getting a 3). This is a poor excuse for an imperial stout. More of a dark belgian strong than anything else. Normally I would rate this better except that it is totally out of style. Just so strange.

22 oz bottle pours a black brown with a thin beige head. Aroma is light but chcolatey and a touch of fruit. Thin body. Sort of thin flavors to go along with it. Chcolate, coffee, roasted, a touch of fruit. But really nothing to make this imperial or set it apart from even a lot of stouts. Meh.

22oz. Bottle: Medium sweet aroma is rather faint. Aroma of dark and chocolate malts, a little alcohol, and some roasting. Poured black in color with a medium-sized, foamy, rocky, brown head that lasted throughout. Opaque. Medium sweet flavor. Tastes of malts, chocolate, coffee, roasting, and some cream. Full body. Dryish creamy texture. Soft carbonation. Sweet, malty chocolate finish.

22 oz bottle. Pours black, nearly opaque. Almost no head, beige, quickly diminishing. Light fruity aroma, maybe cherry or cranberry. Malt flavor up front, ends on bitter chocolate. Light aftertaste of bitter chocolate. Light to medium body, almost no carbonation. Alcohol hidden well. Very drinkable, but more so for the imperial stout drinker than others.

Bottle. I feel like this is more of a dry stout than an imperial stout. If they’d labeled it as such I think I would’ve rated it better. But, anyway, sweet and a little tart, with a dry bitter finish. Not bad.
