Commercial Description:
This deep dark delight harkens back to the days when such brews were shipped to the Imperial Court of Russia. With a firm roasty maltiness balanced against a generous helping of hops, Northwind has what it takes to stand up to the worst its namesake can dish out! Enjoy it by a roaring fire. Formerly called Iditarod Imperial Stout.

12 oz. bottle (2008-9) in a snifter; pours ruby-tinted black w/ a pretty sorry mocha head; aroma is a little sour w/ some dull notes of coffee and chocolate; flavor is remarkably boring for the style, w/ some smoke and chocolate; not as full bodied as I would have liked either. A rather disappointing effort on the whole, I thought.

Pours dark brown with a ruby hue, tan head. Not as thick of a pour as a lot of Imp Stouts. Bitter coffee, some chocolate and sour milk. Wow, really sweet milky, cocoa flavor. Smooth body, the alcohol is well hidden but is too sweet to be considered a good Imperial Stout in my book.

Pours dark brown, black in the glass, thinnish tan head. Sweet, smoky aroma. Palate seems unusually thick, milky. Flavor pairs a smoky, dark chocolate malt, with a sweet-tart fruity element, pineapple and a twist of blueberry esters here, but I didn’t think they harmonized all that well.

Bottle @ BlueBird in Chicago. Pours solid black with a thin tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee, chocolate, and a touch of hops. Solid flavor, but nothing out of the ordinary.

Bottle thanks to Mike B, thanks man! This beer poured solid black with a thin chocolate head. The aroma consisted of roasted malts and fruits. I found the alcohol to be masked very well. The problem I had with this beer was its carbonation. It is overly carbonated and doesn’t match the profile that I am used to. Regardless, it is a good drinking beer but not something I will search out again.

Aroma of roasted malt, heavily cream-infused coffee, bittering hops, chocolate, a hint of alcohol-soaked fruits. Flavor pretty sweet with roasted malt. Bitter, roasted finish. Certainly isn’t as rich as the sort of imperial stout we’re all used to, but I still like it.
