COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This deep dark delight harkens back to the days when such brews were shipped to the Imperial Court of Russia. With a firm roasty maltiness balanced against a generous helping of hops, Northwind has what it takes to stand up to the worst its namesake can dish out! Enjoy it by a roaring fire. Formerly called Iditarod Imperial Stout.

Poured at refrigerator temperature into a crystal tulip. Aroma: Dark and malty, I think I smelled some cocoa. Appearance: Very dark black, one fingerís worth of moderately thick head, the color of coffee flavored ice cream. The head dissipates rather quickly. Taste: Roasty malts, a slight bread flavor, a little earthiness. A bitter aftertaste, sort of like semi-sweet chocolate. At 9.1% the malts do a terrific job of masking the alcohol. Palate: Very thick and dense. It feels like itís leaving a slight coating in my mouth post-swallow. Pleasant and refreshing. Other: Bonus points for moderately-high gravity.

Pours an inky dark brown with a vigorous (in a good way) chocolate milk colored head. Aroma is almost nothing. Hint of chocolate, metallic. Taste is booze, coffee, smoke, medium mouthfeel, smooth finish.

Countbeer (4301) - Best of E-Town mit ein Brauhaus, NETHERLANDS - MAR 30, 2014
Bottle: Served in a Chouffe glass: Deep dark brown pour. Medium sized brown foamy head on top of a black colored beer. Aromas of oatmeal, roast, raisin, some malts come through, some iron, hint of something sweet and a hint of creamy bay leaf. Flavours of roast, oatmeal, caramel, malts, light roast to more toast, some mocha, some raisin, light bitter, some chocolate and a creamy edge. Very nice! Aftertaste is roasty, toasty, malty, light chocolate, oatmeal and some grainy toast. Low carbo, creamy oily close to silky mouthfeel, medium to fuller bodied and an oily texture. Nice beer, creamy, round, balanced!

Bottle. Pours opaque black with a small tan head that dissipates quickly leaving a ring that has some lacing. Aroma is roasty licorice. Flavor is surprisingly astringent and acidic, strong anise, roasted malts and chocolate. Medium plus body, a bit creamy. Not bad, but I am just not much of a fan of anise-heavy stouts.

Bottle. 3/11/14. Pours dark brown-black with a thin, fluffy brown head. Aroma is dark chocolate, dark berries, creamy, chalk, earth, hint of vanilla, touch of berries. Taste is dark chocolate, bubblegum, fruit esthers, grass, light fruits, dark berries, grass, hint of spruce; finish is dark chocolate, leather, bitter fruit peel. Interesting. Thin lacing; not particularly resilient. Medium-full bodied. Medium carbonation; active carbonation, thin bubbles. Tasty, interesting, enjoyable. A bit odd for a Russian Imperial Stout but enjoyable nonetheless.

A strange brew for me due to the lack of an aroma. Try as I might, the only aroma I got was a hint of chocolate and booze, The flavor I thought was excellent. More milk or sweet stout with chocolate and a little vanilla along with some oak. It has a silky feel and is very smooth.

Bottle, pour is black and oily, thin brown head that fades. Aroma is heavy roasted malt, coffee, some cocoa, light lemon and grass. Taste is rich malt, roasted and burnt, some citrus from hops, cocoa in the back. Heavy enough to linger on your tongue, but not too sticky.

On tap poured into a 12oz snifter. A very earthy, dirt-like aroma comes forth early on. When it mellows a bit, this is replaced with the smell of a dark roast coffee. It pours a relatively clear and transparent (for an Imp Stout) dark brown with decent retention of a tan, foamy head, eventually subsiding to a thin, trace layer. It has a nice micro-bubble sheet-like lacing. Itís mostly a taste of bittersweet chocolate malt with some minor, salted caramel-creamy sweetness. With some warmth, this flavors start to become more espresso bitter and dark fruit sweet (grape and cherry come to mind). This medium bodied beer is oily and sticky with some light carbonation. This finish is mild but coats the mouth with a coffee and tobacco finish.

Bottle at HV. I think bro left this. Black color with medium head that dissipated some. Aroma of chocolate and vanilla beans, some roasted malts. Medium light sweetness. Hidden alcohol. Creamy texture. Below average carbonation. Some bitter finish. Enjoyed it. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
