COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
We spent a long night of brainstorming, around a few pints, to create a beer suitable to big our good friends adieu. We found that Reprieve Schwarzbier is the Artisan lager for the job. This black beer is a Bohemian Pilsner gone dark. German malts, noble hops, and lager yeast combine for our take on this traditional beer style. Though they may be moving on, we won’t let the lights go dark.

Bottled. A dark red-brown beer with a brown head. The aroma has notes of caramel, roasted malt, and bread. The flavor is sweet with notes of roasted malt, bread, and a bit of soy sauce, leading to a dry roasted finish.

Bottle 65 cl. Courtesy of kristina. Pours an opaque black with a vague orangey tint and a small and lacing beige head. Sweet roasty nose. Medium body, sweet vanillaish roast, some chocolate here and a little sulphur. Roasty finish but never really bitter. Has the slightest tart edge. But pleasant. 200312

Poured into a snifter. 3.5 A: Black color. Two fingers of cramy tan head. Retention is average and a honeycomb pattern of lacing is left behind. 3.5 S: Clean roastiness, herbal and earthy hops. Grainy with undertones of caramel and chocolate. Good, but could use some more power. Not particularly sweet, but not dry at all. 3.5 T: Taste is more assertive. Big earthy hoppiness, light roast, moderate chocolate, light caramel. More doughy than grainy. 3.5 M: Medium to heavier medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Could use a bit more creaminess, but I do like how thick this is. 3.5 D: Good, solid schwarzbier. This one is a lot less dry than most of that I’ve had of the style. Definitely worth a buy if black lagers are your thing. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 02-16-2012 02:40:13

22 oz. bottle, $7 at Binny’s. Got this in October, and it got stacked up while re-painting the beer cellar. Pours a big black body under a light brown head, just a tad lighter than a stout. Has a more stouty smell than the few other black lagers I’ve had. Much more roasty malt. Has some alcohol in the nose, too. Taste has the roasty roughness of a stout at first, but settles down to let some dry lager character in. Once you get used to the dark roast, it does suggest a heartier Dortmunder or altbier. Definite German noble hops making a bit of peppery spice. Light texture on the tongue, yet a bit heavy in the nose. An interesting combination.

Bottle. Poured a dark clear reddish black color with an average frothy off-white head that was mostly lasting and produced good lacing. Moderate toasted malt and earthy hop aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium toasted sweet flavor with a medium sweet finish of moderate duration. Solid drinkable brew.

Bottle, 22oz. A clear, dark brown beer with a reddish tint. A small, off-white head sits on top. Cocoa, dark chocolate and dried fruits on the nose. Nice, but not very traditional. The flavor has a nice bitterness, some citrus peel and some cocoa and dried fruits. There’s some bitterness going on in the end, as well as roasted malts, orange and cocoa. A quite pleasant one. 111105
