We spent a long night of brainstorming, around a few pints, to create a beer suitable to big our good friends adieu. We found that Reprieve Schwarzbier is the Artisan lager for the job. This black beer is a Bohemian Pilsner gone dark. German malts, noble hops, and lager yeast combine for our take on this traditional beer style. Though they may be moving on, we wonít let the lights go dark.

Draft on tap at Twisted Spoke (Chicago, IL). Newest Two Bros. offering. Pours a near pitchblack hue with some ruby edges, lightens up with the light to reveal a blackish ruby hue, can see through, with a moderate cakey light brown head, like nougat atop. Laces well. Aromas are roasted and sweet clashing, roasted barley and cocoa clash with some sweet caramel, toffee, sweetened chocolate, bread and biscuits. Some touches of coffee, sweet chocolate, toast, a hint of anise. Initial is medium bodied, full thick biscuits and toffee upfront move into cocoa, decent roasted barley, some coffee. Sweeter, with touches of light bitterness, faint anise, and some roastiness into the finish. Nothing overdone in this beer, thicker and lasting on the palate with sweet toffee, biscuits moving into decent roast, toast, light cocoa, and some dry bitterness into the finish. Lingering sweet and roasty malts, a touch of bitter anise and floral dryness. Not bad, lacks some life, but itís a solid fuller Schwarz. And itís exactly what itís supposed to be.

An esbls tasting beer. Mahogany with a tannish head. Rich malt and a bit of smoke. Decent hop bitterness mixes with some molasses. Grass. Smoke at the finish. Despite the lower ABV it is a little hot.
