A traditional farmhouse ale made with a very expressive yeast strain that contributes an array of tropical fruit, spice flavors and aromatics. Brewed with a variety of harvest grains including barley, wheat, oats and rye as was likely the case with farmhouse brewers of yore. Lightly hazy deep, waxy-copper yellow beer with some brighter tints on the edges. Large amount of off-white head is moderately well-retained.
Very, very fruity nose, kind of reminds me of Saizoen Bretta on draught, though minus the brett part. Not heavy on the banana (though it’s there) but with tons of clove, orange, mango and pepper. It all is pretty well-balanced and cohesive, with grainy, caramel-tinged malts sitting in the background. It’s lightly rustic on account of the grain bill, giving it less a straightforward pale/pils malt ubiquitousness. My biggest problem, however, is the lack of distinctive saison quality. No mustiness, very little tartness, cellar notes, minerals, plaster, etc...As I smelled it, I think I would have identified it as a Belgian wit or German here, blindly. Granted, all three styles have a lot of overlap, but I’m less interested in the examples that lean heavily on tropical fruits, clove and banana, which this one does.
In the flavor, it’s got a watery, softly malted texture with lively carbonation, not altogether tight. Spicy (white pepper) and bits of acidity (again, rather German here-like) with pale malt sugars being blunted by a decidedly bitter, astringent note through the middle. Not sure what the hell it is, but it’s very disruptive to the focus and drinkability of the beer. It’s heavily spicy and ends with light hop notes, more clove and light caramel. Meh, Phil can (and has) do much, much better with a saison. I do appreciate the restraint on the abv, however.

Pours a clear gold with a medium white head. Aroma has nice spice notes...clovey...mild citrus rind. Flavor opens with nice tropical and stonefruits and quickly dries out with spicy notes of clove, pepper...light minerally quality. Mouthfeel is light / medium and lively with a dry spiced finish. Crisp and refreshing.

Bottle. An unclear, yellowish beer with a small, dense, white head. The aroma is lighlty grainy, with a generic fruityness and some piney, citrusy hints. Rather grassy too. The flavor is a bit lacking on complexity, with grainy pale malts, citrusy, grassy hops and a decent bitterness. Lacking on the goodness the saison yeasts normally brings. Medium to full body, dry and with a nice carbonation level. Fruity finish. Quenching and easy drinkable, but rather boring. 150610

Pours hazy golden with a white head. Aroma has notes of malt, wheat, yeast, citrus, mango and hint of pepper. Taste is medium sweet and light bitter with a long yeasty, fruity and pepper finish. Body is medium, texture is thin to oily, carbonation is soft.

Bottle. Slightly hazy gold, with a decent, white, head and plenty of fizz. Floral, slightly peppery, hops, grainy malts, a hint of citrus, leading to a dryish finish. Good.
