Cask at Ye Old Elm Tree, Durham, £3.40/pint. Ruby black beer with a thick, cream-coloured head. The nose has the cherries promised but unfortunately they are largely eclipsed in the flavour by a rather over the top smoky character that masks all else. Not great.

A pitch black beer with a frothy but weak tan coloured head. A light aroma, dark malt elements like burnt sugar, nutty, smoky then a red fruit aroma that suggests cherries. Medium dry and slightly thinner than expected mouthfeel. The taste starts off with a smooth and sweet malt flavour, dark caramel and chocolatey, that leads in a ripe jammy, red fruit flavour, definitely cherry plus plum and raisiny dried fruit. Then a dry nutty, woody and slightly smoky flavour comes through towards the end. The finish is dry nutty with a sweetish caramel fruit background. Bottle from the Maris Otter 50 Beer Festival, Norwich.

Cask at GBBF 2015. Black with a high, airy head. Roasty nose, chocolate, coffee, and maybe just a hint of cherry. Soy sauce. A bit weak overall, without much cherry at all.

Cask at GBBF. Black with a small foamy brown head. Aroma is soft biscuity malts, touch of berry. Body is medium, smooth, low carbonation. Taste is bready, some chocolate and roast, not really getting much cherry. Soft bitterness in the finish.

Cask at gbbf 2015 day 4. Opaque black coloured pour with a steadfast light tan head. Aroma is nice milk choc, earthy, nutty roasted malts. Flavour is slightly thin, smooth oats, choc, berry, not much cherry. Lingering woody tannin in the finish. Palate is a bit thin, lowish carbonation.

Cherry stouts were not uncommon in the old days, this is my first so curious to taste this. Deep beige, creamy, lacing head over an almost black beer. Aroma of coffee grounds, cherries and other stonefruit but not dominating, white pepper, some iron, dried leaves, tea. Nutty taste in which the cherries add a very subtle sweetness - but nothing in the neighborhood of sour cherry beers; bit metallic, bit thin, gentle roasted bitterness in the end, very lightly sourish, bitterness of medium duration. Less rich than expected.
