Bottle. Red/brown with a thin head. Cherry aroma with some dark maltiness. Flavour is chocolate and cherry. Too thin and fizzy. Not great.

From cask. Pours dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma is fruity, dark malty and light cherry. Bitter, fruity and dark malty. Bitter, herbal and dry. Bitter finish.

Dark mahogany brown black, muddy slightly nasty estery nose. Hint of overripe nasty cherries. Not nice sour, not balsamic, just bad. Doesn’t smell good to me. Slightly thin roast barley, earthy malts, "inadequate" cherry flavours, thin estery roast finish. Meh.

Bottle from Rehills in Newcastle. A black beer with chocolate and rich cherry flavours and a sweet fruity and slight roasted finish.

500ml bottle, Coppers, Ncl. Ruby Black beer with a nice-looking tan head. Really rich and roasty, with the subtlest cherry sourness adding to the mix. Acrid and a bit smoky, loads of flavour, lingering finish and a lovely bitterness to add to the fine make-up of this excellent stout, some chocolate notes late on.

Bottle, from the brewery, 22 Dec. Rich, dark, nicely carbonated with a decent but quite short lived head. Malty, fruity nose, with a restrained bitter cherry taste, and maybe a hint of marzipan among the estery finish. Good body, easy drinking for 5.2% - grab it while you can, as it is a seasonal beer, and great for Xmas drinking.

Pint at the Isis in Sunderland. Rich dark beer with a thin white head. Unsurpringly, cherries in the aroma, and it really lives up to the smooth dark velvet billing. I’m not a big cherry fan, but prior to drinking, I was intrigued by the combination. I have to say the cherry isn’t overpowering, and this works really well in a Christmas Cakey way. Great winter beer, recommended unreservedly.

[cask at Tyne Bank Brewery, Newcastle] Extremely flat deep red pour with no head to speak of. Aromas of cherry, ripe fruit and sweet malt. Quite sweet on the taste, the cherry comes through at the end – not in a big way, which is a good thing, I think. Quite smooth and very easy to drink for 5.2% [12112011]
