2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Cask at Ye Old Elm Tree, Durham, £3.40/pint.
Ruby black beer with a thick, cream-coloured head. The nose has the cherries promised but unfortunately they are largely eclipsed in the flavour by a rather over the top smoky character that masks all else. Not great.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
A pitch black beer with a frothy but weak tan coloured head. A light aroma, dark malt elements like burnt sugar, nutty, smoky then a red fruit aroma that suggests cherries. Medium dry and slightly thinner than expected mouthfeel. The taste starts off with a smooth and sweet malt flavour, dark caramel and chocolatey, that leads in a ripe jammy, red fruit flavour, definitely cherry plus plum and raisiny dried fruit. Then a dry nutty, woody and slightly smoky flavour comes through towards the end. The finish is dry nutty with a sweetish caramel fruit background. Bottle from the Maris Otter 50 Beer Festival, Norwich.
