Un-Muzzling Olde Muzzlehatch Ratings, #59. On draught (I believe) at the late lamented Blue Nile in Minneapolis, August 2008. Dark but not quite black body with a lasting thin cap of light tan foam...spicy and very roasty "dark" nose, rye and a bit of vanilla and definitely a touch of booziness...very sweet on the tongue, one of the sweetest porters Iíve had actually, very rich and even "thick", roasty certainly but the sweetness and the light lactic sourness are what I remember. Uneven I guess but I do remember liking it quite a bit. Side note apropos of nothing: a terrific restaurant as I remember; Iíve been to three Ethiopian restaurants in my life, in three different cities (Minneapolis, Chicago, New York), and all of them have since closed. Coincidence, or do the Gods of African cuisine hate me? Sad.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Thank you Matt for bringing this to me.
This was poured into a pint glass.
The appearance was a dark brown color with a one finger white foamy head that dissipated within a minute. There was some light torturing stringy lacing roaming around the glass.
The smell had a boozy sort of tight knit chocolate and a slightly bready sort of crustiness.
The taste was mainly the chocolate first with a strong sweet roastiness invading my taste buds.
On the palate, this one sat right about a medium on the body with a pretty good thick chewy roastiness invading my tongue and mouth.
Overall, so glad to have finally tried a Tyranena beer, its about time (hot damn). Would I have this again? Oh yeah, sure would.

Bottle as an extra from Homer321. Big thanks! Pours pitch black with essentially no head at all. Dense as can be. Aroma of big roast, smoke, oak, rye whiskey, spicy grain, chocolate, anise. Very nice. The flavor is very chocolatey roast, spicy rye, whiskey and oak barrel notes, sweet lingering milk chocolate on the palate. Medium plus bodied with light pleasant carbonation. An interesting brew that was not on my radar but am very happy to have the chance to try. A nice way to cap off the night.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle to snifter. Pours almost flat with a head that slowly and slowly grows to be very large, tightly compressed with fine bubbles. Aroma is boozy with some chocolate and bead crust. First sip is all foam from the head. Taste is a huge chocolate bomb, ranging from dark bitter chocolate to milk chocolate. Thick, chewy, and viscous with some subtle barrel character. A little bit of late palate warming and it gets to your chest, but all smooth and not hot. Pretty tasty.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours black with a medium-sized blanket of light brown foam. Good head retention. Lots of fine bubbles cling together in clumps as I work my way through the glass. The aroma has a lot of chocolatey malt with a healthy dose of rye spice and some nice though mild barrel characteristics. Iím also getting some coffee, blackberries, dates and blueberries. The barrel-aging contributes a sweet, vanilla rye flavor. Itís very toned down, which I generally like. Taste-wise, itís sweet and rich. Lots of fruit and chocolate. More rye spice. Light oak with that pleasant vanilla-forward spirit flavor. Mouthfeel is smooth and fairly thick. Another solid beer from Tyranena, though I still prefer Devil Made Me Do It by a bit.

2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Very dark brown, almost black, and almost nonexistent beige lacing. Somewhat subdued aroma of rye, earthy malts, cherries, wood, and hints of chocolate. Thin sweetness with a little metallic undertone. Spicy carbonation, medium-bodied, and an abrupt finish.

3.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20
Deep dark brown coloured body with a fast-dying tan head. Aroma of oak, vanilla, roasted malt, pit fruits, alcohol, cherries, milk, peat and tons of cognac and brandy - very strong nose and nice! Medium-bodied; Slightly watery feel at first with a good deal of flavours ranging from cherries to oak and back to earthy matls. Aftertaste is a bit underwhelming showing vanilla, anise, pepper, cherries and scotch. Overall, a nice and complex smelling beer, but the flavours never reach a maximum with some nice tastes, but fairly thin and not well developed. Great to try, but there are better beers out there in this style! I sampled this stubby twelve ounce bottle purchased from Discount Liqour in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on 05-September-2012 for US$2.49 sampled at home in Washington on 21-November-2013, aging the beer for a bit over 13 months.
