Bitter Woman IPA is our Wisconsin variation of an India Pale Ale. This beer is intensely bitter with a mighty hop flavor and aroma.

Clear red-orange with medium off-white meringue-looking head. Novel dashes of smoke and ground pepper in the nose. Taste is quite bitter and grassy, but under it is a drink not unlike root beer (very apparent in the finish), and with a trace of something herbal and spicy, like dill. An odd one, but not gimmicky, and worth keeping in mind.

Nice dark amber with bubbly white head that stays throughout. A highly drinkable IPA, plenty if flavor to keep your interest. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Located just east of Madison is Lake Mills which is home to Tyranena Brewing. With over 50 different recipes, their IPA named Bitter Woman is one of their most noteworthy. This is a must see brewery if you are already in the area visiting Capital, Ale Asylum, Vintage, or any of the Great Danes. It pours a golden, amber color with a decent foamy head. The scent is rather simple but contains hops. It is what it is, simple yet good. Personally I like a strong hoppy smell with my IPA’s but it’s not required for a good tasting brew. At the first sip you would find it hard to believe that this in an IPA but as the taste progresses, most of the bitterness comes from the after taste. The texture is smooth and invites one sip after another. Other than hops, you get hints of toasted malts and some caramel. It finishes with a dry, chalky after taste. This is one of the backbone products that Tyranena offers year round. I remember sales on this use to be insane on this product and in the last year or two it has slowed down a bit. Certainly a unique tasting IPA with a smooth ale beginning and a bitter IPA finish. You can’t say you are a Tyranena fan without trying a Bitter Woman.

Bottle on Amtrak Train 27 - The Empire Builder ( from Binny’s South Loop) - 04/11/12. Lightly obscured mid amber with a thin off white head that soon forms a pond and clears to the edge. Caramel malts on the nose, orange, light pine. Tastes of caramel malts, hops, grapefruit, orange pith. Medium bodied with soft carbonation leading to a bitter finish. OK.

12 oz. bottle straight from WI. Dark golden/ light amber color. Smells like sweet caramel & nutty malts, with some bitter, piney hops. Tastes almost the same, too. A little more bitter, esp. in the finish. Not bad, just not my favorite IPA style.

12 oz bottle to a pint glass. Pours a clear orange amber with a finger of foamy white head and ok lacing. Aroma is pine and citric fruit. There is some grass and caramel there as well. Taste is grapefruit and orange up front. The pine kicks in and it gets bitter at the end. There are notes of caramel and bread as well. Mouthfeel is thinner and easy to drink. Somewhat sticky. Not bad, this reminds me of a highly hopped pale ale that I make from time to time.

Bottle. Pours a dark copper amber with a thin wispy head. Aroma is dank, vegetal with some floral and spicy notes. Not supper bitter with more savory spicy hop character. Just a touch of sweetness. Some lingering bitterness on the palate. Pleasant carbonation.

Got this in a mixed six-pack from Binny’s in Elmwood Park. I like to try a lot of different types of beer and this seemed like a good way to do it, however, two of the 6 beers I chose were flat (Revolution Bottom’s Up Wit) or had lots of stuff floating in it and skunky. Not sure whether this is the brewers fault or Binny’s, but it disappointing. Smelled skunky and had virtually no head and lots of stuff floating in it. Took a sip before I noticed and just tasted like bitter shit. Wonder if this is quality control on their end or sitting on the shelf too long at the store. Either way it was terrible.

Bottle. Pours a clear orange with minimal white head. Smells sweet, some caramel and light hoppiness. Tastes good, not too bitter, very well balanced for an IPA.
