9/12/2014: Tyranena Shaggin’ in the Wood (70% Scotch Ale Aged In Bourbon Barrels, 30% Scotch Ale)... Cloudy golden copper color with a dense ivory head. Bourbony and sugary maltiness and a hint of caramelized maltiness. The flavor has some bourbon, but not overly so, along with some caramelized sugar, hidden coffee-like roastiness, slight mild hops in the finish. Absolutely delicious. Medium-palate, but feels a bit thin on the palate. Regardless, it’s delicious! Well done Tyranena.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pour is clear burnt brown with red hues and a light yellowish head. Nose is strong charred wood and fairly deep malt aromas. Chocolate, bourbon, burnt caramel and brown sugar. Taste is the same, chocolate, woody, cooked caramel and brown sugar, notes of peat and bourbon through the finish. Body is soft and airy, not too thick with good carbonation but thins out in finish and a little watery. Not a bad beer.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
12 oz. bottle. Pours a minimal head, over a hazy, dark amber brown (SRM 18) body.....nose is light whiskey, vanilla, toffee/caramel, light dried fruits, hints of cocoa....taste is sweet malts, with hints of toffee/caramel, dried fruits including plum, raisin, hints of cocoa, minimal hops finishing with sugar sweetness....mouth feel light of medium, sticky, carbonation low adding tingle. This is a very sugar sweet rendition of Scotch Ale. The bourbon barrel was done with a light hand, malt complexity was present but dominated by simple sweetness. It really needed either greater malt depth of complexity or greater attenuation. BJCP 7/2/11/4/6

3.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
12oz screw-top bottle, thanks to chuckaduck. Mildly hazy red orange brown color -- sort of a brick color. Minimal off-white head, no lace sticks. Caramel malt, some dark fruit, a lot of nice good chocolate flavor in this, some light vanilla and spiciness in the finish, fudge. Moderate to bigger sweet taste, light spicy. A light bite in the finish. Medium-plus body. Lighter carbonation, dry finish. Reasonably smooth. Solid, complex barrel-aged scotch ale.
