Chief BlackHawk Porter is a robust black and sharply bittersweet ale. This style was traditionally the session beer consumed by the porters in London.

12oz bottle from a trade. Dark brown with a tan head. Semi-sweet roasted malts, milk chocolate, some coffee. Moderate body, high initial carbonation but settles down, bittersweet, becomes quite dry, nice malt and chocolate at the end. Worthwhile.

On tap from the brewpub. Pours a very dark brown with some head. Aroma is a very nice sweet choco-caramel - just lovely. Taste brings sweet toffee, chocolate and some dark fruit. Slightly bitter. Not as deep as expected. Finishes sweetly bitter and not long at all. A nice start seemed to not carry through.

Pours nearly black, with a heavy tan head. Scent is chocolate, coffee....roasted. Flavour is coffee, cream, chocolate...some cola. Nice bitter/sweet balance. Very tasty.

Bottle. Roasty malt, chocolate, smoky ash aroma. Black brown with a small tan head. Chocolate, coffee, cola, ash flavor with a light hoppy bitter finish. Light to medium body and carbonation.

12 oz bottle pours an opaque dark ruby brown with a small tan head that quickly recedes to a ring. Aroma has chocolate, roasted malts, ash and maybe even tobacco. Taste is sweet with a nice bitter finish Very lively carbonation Body is thin for a porter. This is a very good and unusual beer - almost like a cross between the porter I expected and an A&W root beer.

Originally reviewed: 4/9/10. Poured into a pint glass. Had with brunch. Pours a dark murky blackish-brown with thin tan head on top. Recedes to just a ring around the edge too quickly. Leaves some sip rings about halfway through the glass. Some ruby highlights on the edge. Dipping my nose into this one, I get some very sweet cream scents, light milk chocolate, roasted malts, and a bit of clean linens (?). Seriously. This smells really clean and fresh. The body, while holding onto a crisp bubbly feel, is quite creamy and smooth. Aides in drinkability quite well. Great roasted flavors in this one. Backed by a bittersweet chocolate presence that is leaning a little more towards the sweet. Slight oily hop taste, but it is faint. Adds just enough of balancing sharp twang to this roasty/sweet beer. I am glad I had this on my íwantsí list as it is one great Porter. Was exactly what I thought it was going to be.

Among the prettiest pours Iíve seen, looking more like something youíd drink at an A&W Root Beer Stand. Lacing inside the glass a nice reminder of what youíve already drank. Little bits of chocolate and coffee in the delightful aroma, which sets you up for a sweet malty taste but surprises with a medium sharp bitterness. The body also is a surprise--far lighter than many porters. That makes a second one, which Iím drinking right now, very possible. Who knows? Iíve got four left, the night is young, and the UWM Panthers menís basketball team will soon be on TV.

Nice malt aroma. Light notes of chocolate and caramel with definite coffee tones. Very inviting, but not too strong. Thin, short lasting tan head. Pours a very dark brown, mahogany. Itís got a great mouth feel thatís a little lighter than I would expect, but fits it well. Nice medium body that coats your mouth just a little. Some woody flavors and obvious dark malts. Bitterness is nice and mellow, but Iíd like a little more sweet. Overall this is a very good porter. Easy drinking. A very good introductory porter.

Bottle pours deep red-brown with a beige head. Aroma shows notes of roasted malt, chocolate, light coffee, and tobacco. Flavor shows plenty of caramel sweetness as well as plum. Overall body is moderate and emphasis is on the roast.

Pours a deep reddish brown, basically black, with a big tan head and good lacing on the glass.

The aroma is roasty and earthy. Pungent and lightly sweet smelling, this is a fairly straightforward but nice smelling beer.

The flavor is roasty and coffee like with a good chocolate expression. The beer is pleasantly bitter all around and has a nice bright hoppiness throughout.

Damned fine porter.
