When this first came out I knew it would be good, Tyranena understands extreme beer. Anyhoo Pours black with a thin light brown head. What a damn beautifal nose, chocolate, bourbon, and coffee all balanced nicely into something i could smell everyday and not every get bored of. Taste is rich and sweet with a clear cut oatmeal back end mixed with chocolate and coffee with a hint of bourbon just enough to be there but not at all overwhelm. Aftertaste is full of coffee beans, overall a great brew with a lot of potential. Keep up the shenanigans Tyranena. lb4lb (2011), Austin, Texas, USA

Pours black with a medium sized and short lived tan head. Smell is bittersweet chocolate and roasty coffee smell, and a bit dull. Taste is slightly creamy and coffee like but wasn’t too strong, I thought. Slightly creamy, yet thin at the same time. Very mild flavor up front, with a medium body and light carbonation. Good, but was rich enough flavorwise to really floor me. Also didn’t get even a hint of bourbon. kmeves (1081), Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, USA

Close to opaque with a small but lasting creamy tan head and good lace. The aroma has notes of espresso, mild oak and vanilla, chocolate, oatmeal, prune, anise, and some veggie vapours (broccoli). The taste profile is mostly sweet malt and twangy dark fruits over a charred barrel with a heavy handed coffee influence on the finish with a hint of coconut. The mouth feel is soft and yet somewhat refreshing due to the thinner palate of the porter and barrel aging.
A excellent brew where the bourbon is very much a background player, the coffee can be a bit heavy. While that does not bother me, I could see others not liking it as much. (Not is the same class as is the The Devil Made Me Do It, IMO) thejoeshow (232), Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | May 25, 2008 Sampled both on tap and from the bottle. Pours a very dark black/brown with a moderate tan head. Aroma is very heavy on the coffee. Almost like fresh ground coffee with subtle notes of chocolate and vanilla. Smells wonderful. Taste is identical to the nose. Very rich full coffee taste with little spots of chocolate, vanilla, and has a little bit of a bourbon at the end. It has a mouthfeel of almost a thin cream. Very smooth and nice going in and down. This beer is SO heavy on the coffee it’s amazing! The only thing I would change is tone down the coffee just a hair to make it easier to pull out some of the other flavors. Very excellent beer though! hopscotch (5558), Vero Beach, Florida, USA

The aroma is a luscious mingling of coffee beans, chocolate, coconut, vanilla and caramel. Medium to full-bodied with lively carbonation. Sweet mocha; lightly acidic; vanilla. Sweet, chocolate-drenched-coconut finish. Bottle provided by headbanger. Thanks to Larry for this world class brew! scoobysnak (249), Appleton, Wisconsin, USA

Maybe a little bit of sugar sweetness but definately no bourbon. Damn! tastes like a cup of coffee with a shot of espresso in it. This is phenomenal tasting. Good dark notes with a hint of sweetness that really makes you want that next sip. Awesome! This beer is extemely silky smooth on the palate, definately the best porter I’ve had. | 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | May 24, 2008 Updated: Jul 16, 2008Pours pitch black with ruby edges when held up to light. Head is big and dense and hangs around for quite a while with good lacing. Wow I have never smelled a beer like this before. The aroma is freshly ground coffee, really, really freshly ground coffee. I also get some sweet malts and vanilla, but the coffee is wonderfully dominant. Spectacular smell. Taste is also dominated by the freshly ground coffee. The initial sweet malt taste gives way to chocolate and coffee before leaving a fairly bitter roasted coffee finish. I know I keep bringing up the coffee, but that’s what’s going on in this brew...and I like it. Mouthfeel is absolutely decadent - smooth and creamy with moderate carbonation. This is one of the best porters (or stouts for that matter) I have ever tasted and is an absolute must for coffee lovers out there (like me). I could drink this all night long. If you haven’t tried this one then do everything you can do get a bottle.
