When the railroad was completed between Madison and Milwaukee in 1882, mucky soils in the glacial swamp near Lake Mills made the tracks most unsteady. A bridge-tender stood guard, 24 hours-a-day, to warn oncoming trains of the danger ahead and caution them to slow their pace. One engineer chose not to heed this warning and the locomotive lost control and tumbled off the bridge into the mud below. The train is said to be forever entombed deep in the muck along the present day Glacial Drumlin trail. We brew Down ‘n Dirty Chocolate Oatmeal Stout thick and black like the glacial muck.

Pitch black with big tan head. Nose heavy with acidic roast malt, coffee, and dark chocolate. Smooth, oatmeal-silky body with more acidic roast malt/coffee with a faint sweet aspect. Lingering bitter chocolate and roast. The acidic roasted malt quality is just slightly more than I’d like. Nice stuff.

[Tap] Draught at Farmhouse in Evanston. Pours an opaque black color with a lasting brown head. Aroma is of roasted malts, chocolate, espresso and vanilla bean. Oatmeal comes out a bit more in the flavor. Milk chocolate, mocha, earthy notes and lingering bittersweet finish. Smooth and creamy mouthfeel. Pleasantly surprised by this one.

Too thin in my opinion especially for an oatmeal stout. Has a finger tan head that recess nicely. Good flavor nothing that makes it unique but a middle of the road oatmeal chocolate stout. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Aromatic and flavorful. Sweet. Roasty. Really pleasant bitterness through the finish. Coffee and chocolate stand out.

Draft to taster. Looks good; a mostly opaque dull block with light beige lacing. Smells of dark malt, dark chocolate, oats, and light roast. Tastes like it smells with a solid mouthfeel; a bit of a metallic finish though. A solid example of the style.
