When the railroad was completed between Madison and Milwaukee in 1882, mucky soils in the glacial swamp near Lake Mills made the tracks most unsteady. A bridge-tender stood guard, 24 hours-a-day, to warn oncoming trains of the danger ahead and caution them to slow their pace. One engineer chose not to heed this warning and the locomotive lost control and tumbled off the bridge into the mud below. The train is said to be forever entombed deep in the muck along the present day Glacial Drumlin trail. We brew Down ‘n Dirty Chocolate Oatmeal Stout thick and black like the glacial muck.

Deep mahogany color out of the bottle with a fluffy brown head. Chocolate and cereal grain nose. Very smooth mouthfeel with flavors of chocolate, dark toast, dried fruit, burnt caramel, and some sweetened coffee in the finish. Tasty oatmeal stout.

Draft to taster. Looks good; a mostly opaque dull block with light beige lacing. Smells of dark malt, dark chocolate, oats, and light roast. Tastes like it smells with a solid mouthfeel; a bit of a metallic finish though. A solid example of the style.

Bottled 2/6/13. Poured 12/19/13. Pours opaque brown-black with a fluffy light brown head. Aroma is chocolate, roast, bready, earth; fairly simple. Taste is creamy, malty, some alcohol, chocolate, coffee; simple but really nice. Finish is bitter chocolate. Nice lacing throughout. Medium-low carbonation. Chewy mouth feel. Really nice, tasty, drinkable. Excellent.

Pours a fairly translucent dark brown from the bottle, appearing black in the glass with a fairly thick khaki head that settles to a ring and leaves spotty lace. Nose involves roasted malt, toasted notes, chocolate, earthy hops, dust, and vanilla. Quite sweet, fairly bitter. Rich but thinner side of medium bodied, silky, pretty actively carbed, tingly, sticky, with a chocolaty bitter finish. Pretty enjoyable if a bit lacking body-wise. Bottled Feb ’13.

Draught @ Dexter’s in Madison.
Pours basically black with a small tight head and nice lacing on the glass.

The aroma is funny, in a sort of malt extract kind of way... more pleasant notes include chestnut, ash, light coffee... mild chocolate. Pretty ok smelling all around.

The flavor is really nice, rich and roasty with some sweetness up front and plenty of bitterness to back that up. Not overbearing, but very flavorful, pretty well balanced, pretty grate.

Pours an opaque black with a small tannish head mostly dissipating. Nose is coffee and molasses. Exceptionally smooth and creamy, this brew is full bodied and full of dark molasses, coffee, dark chocolate and malt flavors with a very light hop suggestion. An excellent beer for its style, it pairs well with pan fried bluegills and hash browns with onions.
